HRC MARKS TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE, HONORING LIVES LOST AS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE AGAINST TRANSGENDER PEOPLE CONTINUES: “On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we join together to mourn the lives lost to hate and violence this past year and rededicate ourselves to the urgent action that this epidemic requires,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “From anti-trans employment and housing discrimination to systemic racism, we must recognize the intersecting factors that influence, motivate and embolden the violence that plagues so many within the transgender community — particularly Black and Latina transgender women. White, cisgender men like me have a unique responsibility to support our transgender siblings in combating this violence, and join fully in the work to achieve equality for every person in the LGBTQ community.”

  • Yesterday, HRC released A National Epidemic: Fatal Anti-Transgender Violence in America in 2018, a heartbreaking report honoring the at least 22 transgender people killed in 2018 in the U.S. and detailing the factors that lead to this tragic violence. The new report found that since the start of the year, at least 22 transgender people have been killed in the U.S., and since January 2013, HRC has documented at least 128 transgender people who were victims of fatal violence; at least 110 were transgender people of color. Read more from HRC.
  • Last week, HRC and the University of Connecticut released a new report detailing the alarming challenges and barriers facing transgender and gender-expansive youth around the country — and their perseverance in the face of discrimination and harassment.
  • HRC National Press Secretary Sarah McBride (@SarahEMcBride) and Acting Senior Vice President, HRC Foundation Jay Brown (@ThisIsJayBrown) both penned Twitter threads about the importance of Transgender Day of Remembrance.
  • HRC is co-sponsoring an event to commemorate the day this evening from 6-8pm in DC. Additional information is available via the Washington Blade.

From 2013-2017, at least 106 transgender people in the United States — the vast majority trans women of color — were lost to fatal violence. #TDOR [thread]

HRC SENDS FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST AFTER TRUMP-PENCE AND USDA ATTACK LGBTQ YOUTH: The request demands “any and all records… related to the Trump administration pushing the national 4-H youth organization to withdraw a policy welcoming LGBTQ members.” HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof said, “For over a century, the national 4-H youth program has taught tens of millions of children the importance of character and community. This latest action by the Trump-Pence Administration is an unnecessary and cruel attack on LGBTQ youth that seeks to destroy community rather than create it. We are determined to get answers on how this came about and demand that Congress protect LGBTQ youth from this callous attack.” More from HRC.
