HRC ANNOUNCES UNPRECEDENTED SUPPORT FOR EQUALITY ACT FROM MORE THAN 200 BUSINESSES: The bipartisan Equality Act would finally add clear, comprehensive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people to our nation’s civil rights laws. “Every LGBTQ person deserves to earn a living, raise their families and live their lives free from discrimination,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “And these leading companies know that protecting their employees and customers from discrimination isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s also good for business.” Read more from HRC.

MAINE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PASSES MEASURE PROTECTING LGBTQ YOUTH FROM DANGEROUS “CONVERSION THERAPY”: “It is heartening to see the Maine House of Representatives stand up for LGBTQ youth by passing this critical legislation that will protect some of the most vulnerable Mainers from an extremely damaging practice,” said Xavier Persad, HRC senior legislative counsel. “Now, the Senate should act quickly to pass this legislation and send it to the governor’s desk.” Read more from HRC.
THANKFUL THURSDAY — RYAN O’CONNELL RECEIVES VISIBILITY AWARD AT HRC ATLANTA GALA: As a gay man with cerebral palsy and an actor, writer and producer, O’Connell (@ryanoconn) has been an outspoken advocate for both the LGBTQ community and people living with disabilities. BODILY AUTONOMY IS VITAL FOR INTERSEX YOUTH: “Our attachment to the idea of a “normal” body — a body that falls neatly within the gender binary — is driving surgeries on intersex infants and children (absent a true medical necessity),” writes Afshan Jafar (@afshanjafar), associate professor of sociology at Connecticut College, for The New York Times.
INVESTIGATION INTO WYOMING JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CONFIRMS TROUBLING ANTI-LGBTQ AND RACIST HARASSMENT AND BULLYING: In addition, the investigation found that students with disabilities were also targeted and concluded that staff at Cheyenne’s McCormick Junior High School had violated school district policy in their response to the incidents. The school district is holding a community meeting May 23 to discuss next steps, and is planning cultural competency training for school staff.
