HRC ENDORSES STACEY ABRAMS FOR GA. GOVERNOR: Abrams consistently opposed discriminatory legislation during her tenure in the Georgia House of Representatives, and aims to make Georgia a welcoming state for business and for all citizens, regardless of who they are. “HRC is proud to endorse Stacey Abrams for Governor of Georgia,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Leader Abrams has been a tireless ally for LGBTQ Georgians in the state legislature, and she will be a vital voice for the LGBTQ community and all Georgians in the Governor’s Mansion. CDC RELEASES NEW REPORT SHOWING HARROWING DATA FOR LGB YOUTH: The report shows that LGB youth are disproportionately at risk for interpersonal violence, drug and alcohol use and poor mental health outcomes. This data reinforces the urgent need for federal and state initiatives to address these critical needs. Recently, the HRC Foundation and the University of Connecticut released the largest-of-its-kind survey ever of more than 12,000 LGBTQ teenagers across the nation, showing findings consistent with the CDC’s data and detailing the persistent challenges so many of LGBTQ youth face going about their daily lives at home, at school and in their communities. HRC’s data also shows these outcomes are worse for transgender and non-binary youth, and we expect the CDC to add questions regarding gender identity and trans identities to future surveys. FOOTBALL (OR ‘SOCCER’ HERE IN THE STATES!) FRIDAY: Ahead of the World Cup, HRC has released a new resource for reporters covering the event. Titled “Equality in the Stands,” it details ways to help make sporting events more inclusive of LGBTQ athletes, coaches, and fans. There are major concerns for LGBTQ fans who may be headed to the World Cup in Russia, as well as for LGBTQ Russians who are facing extreme challenges. The resource briefly lays out the hostile climate in Russia, the ongoing anti-LGBTQ purge in Chechnya, and FIFA’s new policy on human rights — implemented after Russia was selected for the 2018 World Cup. The resource is available from HRC in both English and Spanish.

HRC ENDORSES COLIN ALLRED FOR U.S. CONGRESS (TX-32): Allred is a civil rights attorney and a North Texas native. During the 2017 legislative session in Texas, Allred was an outspoken critic of the anti-transgender legislation SB6. “Colin Allred has been a consistent ally to the LGBTQ community, and he would continue to be one if elected to Congress,” said Marty Rouse, HRC national field director. “HRC is proud to endorse Colin Allred and fight alongside him to ensure that all Texans are represented in Congress.” More from HRC.

GOP SENATE NOMINEES TRY TO COZY UP TO ANTI-LGBTQ GROUP: Two GOP Senate nominees, Kevin Cramer from North Dakota and Corey Stewart from Virginia, asked for endorsements from the anti-LGBTQ extremist group Public Advocate of the U.S., by saying they would support discrimination towards LGBTQ people.
