BREAKING — BOTSWANA HIGH COURT OVERTURNS COLONIAL-ERA LAW CRIMINALIZING SAME-SEX RELATIONS: “Today’s historic decision puts an end to a law that discriminated against and violated the most fundamental human rights of an entire group of people,” said HRC Director of Global Partnerships Jean Freedberg (@FreedJean). Tashwill Esterhuizen, a 2017 HRC Global Innovator who led the Southern Africa Litigation Centre’s efforts to litigate this case, called it, “a positive step toward the inclusion of our community across Africa and the world.” Read more at HRC, and Pink News.

NEW PRRI SURVEY SHOWS SUPPORT FOR TRANSGENDER PEOPLE INCREASING AMID TRUMP-PENCE ATTACKS ON LGBTQ COMMUNITY: Reports TIME’S Abby Vesoulis (@abbyvesoulis): “More than six in ten Americans say they have become more supportive of transgender rights compared to their stances five years ago… The findings from the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), a nonpartisan research organization, show a shift in public perception across political parties. Over three-quarters of Democrats surveyed reported being more supportive of transgender rights now than in 2014. Meanwhile, 64% of independents said they felt this way, and 47% of Republicans did.” Read more at TIME and PRRI.

  • And nearly two-thirds of Americans oppose the Trump-Pence discriminatory ban on transgender troops — including an increasing percentage of Republicans, the survey found. Read more at The Washington Post.  

“COPY, PASTE, LEGISLATE” — HOW ANTI-LGBTQ ORGS PUSH CHILD WELFARE BILLS THAT HARM LGBTQ PEOPLE IN STATEHOUSES NATIONWIDE: An investigation by the Center for Public Integrity, The Tennessean and USA Today reveals the lengths that the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation has gone to push legislation across the nation that allows discrimination against prospective adoptive and foster parents — including  based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. They found 66 bills copycat bills in 21 states and the U.S. House with model language matching the first of these “license to discriminate” bills that passed 16 years ago in North Dakota. THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION ADOPTS POLICY ON ANTI-TRANS VIOLENCE: AMA board member Bobby Mukkamala said violence against transgender people is “on the rise and most victims were black transgender women,” adding that “the number of victims could be even higher due to underreporting and better data collection by law enforcement is needed to create strategies that will prevent anti-transgender violence.” Read more at the Washington Blade.

VATICAN RELEASES ANTI-LGBTQ DOCUMENT REJECTING TRANS IDENTITY, INTERSEX COMMUNITIES AND SAME-SEX RELATIONSHIPS: HRC condemned the Vatican’s new anti-LGBTQ statement, which may have a significant effect on transgender and intersex Catholics particularly. Recent polling by the Public Religion Research Institute found that 72 percent of Catholics support fully-inclusive LGBTQ non-discriminantion protections in employment, housing and public spaces.
