HRC KICKS OFF PRIDE MONTH BY LAUNCHING SUMMER OF ACTION 2018: HRC’s nationwide Summer of Action is anchored by more than 500 local events in all fifty states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Today, HRC President Chad Griffin will kick off a month-long series of campaign events in half a dozen battleground states with events in Madison, Wisconsin. “Donald Trump and Mike Pence have awakened a sleeping giant. Never before have Americans been more eager to participate, advocate and fight back against this administration’s hateful policies and rhetoric,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “HRC’s grassroots army of more than 3 million members and supporters are already organizing and mobilizing to support pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot who will help us pull the emergency brake on the Trump-Pence agenda in November.”

As we embark on this historic campaign, let’s check out the state of play for LGBTQ equality in the states:
- States are making big moves to protect LGBTQ youth from the dangerous practice of “conversion therapy.” This year, Hawaii, Maryland and Washington have enacted such protections and New Hampshire has passed legislation awaiting the governor’s signature. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia now have these protections. More from HRC.
- At least six additional pro-equality bills have passed state legislatures, including measures that protect LGBTQ inmates and add gender identity to state non-discrimination laws, and bills related to how gender markers and gender identity are recorded on birth and death certificates. - However, anti-LGBTQ bills were signed into law in Oklahoma and Kansas, giving child welfare organizations — including adoption and foster care agencies — a license to discriminate against qualified people seeking to care for a child in need, including LGBTQ couples or other parents to whom the agency has a religious objection. And federally:
- Any day now, the Supreme Court of the United States is expected to rule in Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, a case involving a baker who in 2012 refused to provide a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. That means the Supreme Court could decide whether doors can be closed to some or whether they must be #OpenToAll. More from HRC.
- Challenges to the Trump-Pence transgender military ban continue. In April, a federal court in Seattle found that the implementation plan of the ban violates the Constitution, and that the lawsuit brought by Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN — in which HRC is an organizational plaintiff — can proceed to trial. - HRC continues to expose “The Real Mike Pence,” who has flown under the radar, amassing enormous power and quietly spearheading a charge to radically undermine the rights of LGBTQ people and women, attack voting rights, undercut sound science, and enable the greatest assault on American institutions in modern history. - Education Sec. Betsy DeVos has spent her time in office relentlessly attacking the rights of transgender students, youth of color, survivors of sexual assault and students with disabilities. HRC and artist Robin Bell recently projected a message to DeVos onto the U.S. Department of Education building, highlighting the harrowing results of a groundbreaking HRC survey of 12,000 LGBTQ. And here’s DeVos telling Congress she won’t protect trans kids — despite court rulings. Check it out at HRC.
- Despite these attacks, LGBTQ teens are overwhelmingly proud of who they are:

And from coast to coast, HRC’s staff, members and volunteers are fanning out to support voter registration efforts, phone banking, candidate events, grassroots advocacy trainings, and step up visibility and outreach at LGBTQ Pride parades, festivals and other events. The Summer of Action will also intensify HRC’s already-unprecedented grassroots effort to engage equality-minded voters in key states and congressional districts ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
