#AM_Equality Tipsheet: January 25, 2019

HISTORY WILL BE MADE TODAY IN NY AS GOV. ANDREW CUOMO IS POISED TO SIGN PRO-LGBTQ MEASURES INTO LAW: The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) and legislation protecting LGBTQ youth in the state from the dangerous and debunked practice of so-called “conversion therapy” will be signed at a ceremony at the New York City LGBT Community Center, marking the culmination of more than a decade of work by HRC and many others, both inside and outside of the Capitol. GENDA solidifies existing law by explicitly adding gender identity and expression to the New York Human Rights Law.

HRC CALLS ON VA HOUSE OF DELEGATES TO PASS CRUCIAL NON-DISCRIMINATION PROTECTIONS FOR LGBTQ VIRGINIANS:

FLASHBACK FRIDAY — TRUMP’S TRANSGENDER MILITARY BAN AND LESSONS FROM A LIFETIME OF GENDER-POLICING: “In Trump’s America and elsewhere, anyone who appears to depart from the gender binary is instantly cast as a suspect, but the ability to shrug off this suspicion is heavily contingent on one’s skin color, bank account, and geographic fortune,” writes Masha Gessen (@mashagessen), a staff writer at The New Yorker. “Even those who are not affected by the Supreme Court decision have been reminded once again that our rights can be taken away at any time, on a whim — that the widespread impulse toward gender-policing has the force of the highest branches of government behind it.”  More from The New Yorker.

HYATTSVILLE, MD NEW POLICE CHIEF MAKES HISTORY: “Little girls are like, ‘My chief is a girl?! High five!’” said Amal Awad. “It’s a good feeling because you’re standing in a position where you’re able to influence and inspire young people to aspire to do something to help the greater good.” Awad is the first black, first woman and first LGBTQ chief in the department’s 132-year history. More from The Washington Post.

EXEC. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL BLACK JUSTICE COALITION CALLS ON CONGRESS TO PASS THE EQUALITY ACT: “Too often, simply as a result of who we are and how we identify, we risk being denied public services and access to places like hospitals, service stations and restaurants,” writes David J. Johns (@MrDavidJohns) in an oped for The Hill. “Without non-discrimination protections we also risk being denied access to housing and shelter, education and employment opportunities– consequently the skills, experiences, and relationships needed to unlock the pathway to the American dream.” More from The Hill.
