NCAA PULLS CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS FROM NC OVER DISCRIMINATORY HB2 LAW: HRC hailed the NCAA’s decision yesterday to stand up for LGBTQ equality by moving all 2016-2017 championship events out of the state of North Carolina due to the anti-LGBTQ HB2 law. In its decision, the NCAA cited its commitment to an “inclusive atmosphere for all college athletes, coaches, administrators and fans,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin): “The NCAA just sent a clear message to North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory and state lawmakers that it will not tolerate hateful laws targeting student athletes, fans, and employees. Every day that HB2 remains on the books, countless people across North Carolina are at risk of real harm. NCAA President Mark Emmert has shown tremendous leadership by taking a bold stand for equality in the face of discrimination. It’s long past time state lawmakers repealed this vile law, and if they don’t, the majority of voters opposed to HB2 will ensure they pay the price in November.” See reports in the The Washington Post and The Charlotte News & Observer, which said: “If Gov. Pat McCrory and the North Carolina legislators who have failed to repeal or otherwise fix House Bill 2 didn’t see this one coming, they just weren’t paying attention.”
Unhinged @NCGOP statement. This is sickening and they should apologize immediately. t.co/4BdPHxylp2

- North Carolina GOP releases shocking, transphobic statement about NCAA decision.
- Meanwhile, Greensboro, N.C.-based ACC President John Swofford says that HB2 and future league events in NC will be discussed at this week’s ACC Council of Presidents meeting, adding: “On a personal note, it’s time for this bill to be repealed as it’s counter to basic human rights. More from NBC.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ASKS FOR CLARIFICATION IN TRANS DISCRIMINATION CASE: The federal government filed a brief yesterday asking for clarification regarding an injunction issued by a federal judge last week pertaining to guidance provided to school districts by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice regarding the civil rights of transgender students. In Texas v. United States, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor blocked the Department of Justice from enforcing the guidance that provides advice to schools about how to ensure that the civil rights of transgender students are not abridged, including their rights to use restrooms and other facilities consistent with their gender identity. The federal government’s brief says the injunction could have broader implications than the judge intended for transgender workers and others, and are therefore asking for several clarifications to the order. More from BuzzFeed.
- The Virginia Supreme Court said yesterday it will consider an appeal brought by the deplorable, anti-LGBTQ Liberty Counsel challenging the Fairfax County School District’s LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination policy. A county circuit court judge dismissed the lawsuit in February. More from The Washington Blade.
CONGRESSWOMAN ROS-LEHTINEN CO-SPONSORS EQUALITY ACT: Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) (@RosLehtinen), is now the second Republican in the House to co-sponsor the Equality Act, a bill that would establish explicit, permanent protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity in matters of employment, housing, access to public places, federal funding, credit, education and jury service. In addition, it would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in federal funding and access to public places. HRC Communications Director Jay Brown (@JayBrownHRC) said, “Equality isn’t a partisan value. It’s an American value. Representative Ros-Lehtinen is once again stepping up to ensure LGBTQ people have the same access and opportunities as our neighbors.”
