LGBTQ STUDENTS FACE DIFFICULT CHALLENGES WHEN RETURNING TO UNSUPPORTIVE HOMES DUE TO COVID-19: With many LGBTQ college students now at home and isolated from support structures on campus, professors, fellow students and advocates are working to find ways to ensure LGBTQ students receive support. “The LGBTQ community is more likely than the general population to face financial difficulties and health problems, especially if they lack support from their families, which could disadvantage them during the pandemic — and compound the risk that they’ll drop out,” writes Sarah Brown. HRC MOURNS PENÉLOPE DÍAZ RAMÍREZ, TRANS LATINA KILLED IN PUERTO RICO: Her death is believed to be the ninth violent death of a transgender or gender non-conforming person this year in the U.S., and the fifth of those deaths in Puerto Rico. “Penélope did not deserve to die. Transgender people do not deserve to die. Every single advocate, ally, elected official and community member must stand up in light of this horrific news and say ‘No more.’ What we are doing is not enough,” said Tori Cooper, HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative. “Transgender and gender non-conforming people, especially women of color, are too often the victims of a toxic mix of transphobia, racism and misogyny. HRC stands in solidarity with all who knew and loved Penélope, and we will continue our tireless fight to ensure a future where living one’s truth can never become a death sentence.” Read more from HRC, and read HRC’s 2019 annual report on the epidemic of violence against the transgender community here.
