Tonight, the 71^st Primetime Emmys were held in Los Angeles and included wins for several LGBTQ stars, creatives, and inclusive television projects!

Out actor Billy Porter made history tonight when he won the Emmy in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Pray Tell in FX’s GLAAD Media Award-winning drama Pose. The second season recently wrapped, but the series has already been renewed for a third season to return to FX next year.

“The truly talented Billy Porter just made history as the first out gay man and first Black gay man to win the Emmy in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as well as the first time this award has gone to an actor portraying a gay character,” said GLAAD CEO & President Sarah Kate Ellis. “Congratulations to Billy for this well deserved honor and for always using his work and platform to showcase the power of being authentic.”

Out actor Ben Whishaw picked up the Emmy in Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his work on A Very English Scandal. The series, from out writer Russel T. Davies, is based on a true story about UK politician Jeremy Thorpe (Hugh Grant), Whishaw played Thorpe’s former lover Norman Scott. The series follows the twists and turns and political intrigue that follows their breakup as Thorpe’s career moved forward. Netflix’s GLAAD Media Award-winning reality series Queer Eye took home four Emmys, including the top prize Outstanding Structured Reality Program. RuPaul’s Drag Race picked up four awards – including a fourth win in a row in Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program for RuPaul and the top prize in Outstanding Competition Program.

Out actress Cherry Jones took home the Emmy in Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Holly in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. On the comedy side, out actress and comedian Jane Lynch won the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series trophy for her portrayal of Sophie Lennon on Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Hannah Gadsby won the Emmy in Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for her Netflix special Nanette, which was also awarded a Special Recognition GLAAD Media Award earlier this year. Kate McKinnon was part of the Saturday Night Live cast which won for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge won the Emmy in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Fleabag, the most recent season has begun to explore her character being bisexual and having a relationship with another woman. The series also took the award in Outstanding Comedy Series. Jodie Comer picked up the award in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work as bisexual killer Villanelle on BBC America’s Killing Eve. Patricia Arquette, recipient of GLAAD’s Vanguard Award at the 28^th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, used her stage moment to pay tribute to her sister Alexis and call for an end to discrimination against transgender people. Nominee Laverne Cox used her fashion to shine a light on the upcoming October 8 Supreme Court case that will impact the lives of LGBTQ people with a special clutch, and also brought ACLU Staff Attorney Chase Strangio as her date to speak to the implications of the case from the red carpet. Out bi musician Halsey also made an appearance to perform the evening’s “In Memoriam” segment.
