The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which took place on Monday, were one of the queerest nights in the show’s history, with many LGBTQ artists and supporters of the community taking home a Moonman in several major categories.

Taylor Swift’s video for the pro-LGBTQ anthem “You Need Calm Down” – which features several out LGBTQ celebs like Ellen DeGeneres, Laverne Cox, Adam Rippon, Hayley Kiyoko, and the cast of Queer Eye – took home the award for Video of the Year and Video for Good. Lil Nas X made history when he won the VMA for Best Song with his record-breaking hit “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, making him the first out LGBTQ musician to win in this category. The video for “Old Town Road” also won the VMA for Best Direction. Other LGBTQ artists who took home VMAs this year include Halsey (Best K-Pop for “Boy with Luv” with BTS) and Panic! At The Disco (Best Rock for “High Hopes”).

Several LGBTQ artists and allies of the community also took to the stage to perform throughout the night. Taylor Swift opened the show with her hit “You Need to Calm Down,” where she was accompanied by several drag queens and members of the LGBTQ community that appeared in the video. Ally Lizzo performed an electrifying medley of her two hits “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell.” Rapper Lil Nas X lit up the VMA stage with a futuristic performance of his new single “Panini.” During Missy Elliott’s Vanguard performance, Alyson Stoner appeared on stage to recreate her dance from Missy Elliott’s 2002 video for the song “Work It.” Later in the evening, Miley Cyrus also took to the stage to perform her emotional new single “Slide Away.”

On the red carpet, GLAAD had the chance to speak with various LGBTQ celebs and allies of the community about representation in entertainment, LGBTQ inclusion amongst this year’s VMA nominees, and growing support for LGBTQ artists in the music industry. Check out GLAAD’s interviews with Jonathan Van Ness, Bebe Rexha, Hayley Kiyoko, Lance Bass, Peppermint, and Alyson Stoner below.
