‘If She Could See Me Now’

I don’t often photograph much that is personal to me.
For 4 years i’ve focused on the city and nature around me in the Pacific Northwest but this is a special photograph to me and since Flickr is now the main home of my portfolio and where i’m found daily online and will continue to be… I’d like this here as well.
This is my Mother. She passed when i was 17 in 1992 after many years of struggling with health issues. She was bipolar like i am and she also battled schizophrenia which i do not suffer from. Her life wasn’t easy but she was an amazingly kind and compassionate person. Her intentions earlier in life were to become a Nurse but i happened and she ended up focusing on family life instead.
When i was young my Catholic family in Massachusetts where i am originally from weren’t very happy with my wanting to play with dolls and at one point wanting to put on dresses. She was the only person who not only was supportive of me but also made sure i knew she loved me and that there was nothing wrong with me, it was a matter of other people taking issue because they were uncomfortable with things in life.
Age 44 now approaching 3 years on HRT Estrogen Hormones i appear different, i’m finally happy and far more well adjusted in my own body and for the first time in life i feel OK. It’s been 27 years since i’ve seen her but one thing is certain:
If she could see me now she’d still be on my side and that means the world to me. I have no family otherwise at this point in life.
*The photograph of her was taken i believe when she was a Senior in High School, a couple years before i was born. I only have a few photos of her and this is my favorite, how i remember her best from when i was little.
