Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The Netflix film Otherhood, starring Angela Bassett and Patricia Arquette, is available for streaming and in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles today. The film features three mothers visiting their sons, including one who visits her gay son (Jake Lacy) and his boyfriend (Frank De Julio). Watch the trailer below. In other film news, queer actress Aubrey Plaza is set to star in Black Bear, an upcoming thriller by director Lawrence Michael Levine. The film is currently in production, and is slated for a 2020 release date.

2) The L Word: Generation Q has added out trans actress Jamie Clayton (Sense8), along with Freddy Miyares and Carlos Leal, to the cast of the reboot. The series has also set a premiere date for December 8, as well as released new photos at Showtime’s TCA panel today. The updated version of show has a cast that includes Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey from the original The L Word, as well as new cast members Arienne Mandi, Leo Sheng, Jacqueline Toboni, Rosanny Zayas, and Sepideh Moafi.

3) A trailer has been released for the upcoming musical finale of Transparent. Out trans actresses Alexandra Billings, Shakina Nayfack, and Trace Lysette, among others star in the series finale for the GLAAD Media Award-winning Amazon Prime series, The finale airs on September 27; watch the trailer below. Out actress, writer and producer Lena Waithe has signed an overall deal with Amazon. Waithe already had a two-season commitment with the studio for the horror anthology series THEM, and will create and produce other original series under the new deal.

4) A teaser for FX’s upcoming season of American Horror Story has been released. Titled 1984, this season will explore the horrors of Camp Redwood, and premieres September 18 on FX. Watch the trailer below. In casting news, out actor Denis O’Hare has joined the cast of Joss Whedon’s upcoming HBO series The Nevers. The science fiction drama also includes a pansexual character named Hugo Swann (played by James Norton). The show is about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world. It is set to debut sometime in 2020.

5) RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9 winner Sasha Velour has inked a deal with upcoming streaming service Quibi to bring her docu-series Nightgowns to the site. Read the full announcement from Sasha below. Also for Quibi, out gay comedian Guy Branum has been signed on to write a “modern take” on the 2003 romcom How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, which starred Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.

6) In other TV news, Disney Channel made history with the Andi Mack series, which features the network’s first gay teen couple, Cyrus (Joshua Rush) and TJ (Luke Mullen), also known as “Tyrus.” Young Justice: Outsiders has confirmed the queerness of one of its male characters, Kaldur, as he shares an on-screen kiss with another young man in a recent episode. Netflix original Trinkets, which has a queer lead played by out actress Brianna Hildebrand, was renewed for a second and final season, set for a 2020 release. Hulu has also renewed GLAAD Media Award nominated drama The Handmaid’s Tale for a fourth season.

7) REVRY, the LGBTQ-themed channel on the free, live-streaming television platform Pluto TV, has announced its August premiere schedule. Highlights include The Queens (August 18), a documentary that follows RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants Alaska Thunderf*ck, Sharon Needles, Jinkx Monsoon, and Katya; Miss Rosewood (August 18), a documentary film about the eponymous extreme performance artist and trans advocate; Sink Sank Sunk (August 25) about an isolated gay young man who loses his mother (Oscar-nominated actress Laura Linney), but finds himself, love, and community through synchronized swimming—you can watch the trailer below. 8) K. Flay released a music video for her newest single, “Sisters.” Watch it below. In other music news, out gay rapper Kidd Kenn has officially signed with Island Records. The 16-year-old Chicago native released his first independent project Childish last year, and has collaborated with Queen Key, performed with queer singer Kehlani, and is supported by Taylor Bennett and Young M.A. Drag Queen Shea Couleé released a gorgeous black-and-white video for their single, “Rewind.” Watch the video here. Country group The Highwomen, which includes out singer Brandi Carlile, has released their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” Listen here. 

9) BROCKHAMPTON, lead by out gay rapper Kevin Abstract, has released a new video for their single, “I Been Born Again,” which you can watch below. Pop group Polartropica released a gender-bending, Grease-inspired and queer-themed music video to their song, “Another Life.” You can watch the video, the first in a trilogy, here. Electronic duo Rituals of Mine, which consists of vocalist Terra Lopez and drummer Adam Pierce, put out a video for their song “BURST.” Watch the video dubbed “Queer Space Jam for 2019” here. 

10) In more music news, out musicians Adam Lambert and Ben Platt have been announced as part of the lineup for the 2019 Global Citizen Festival, a free, ticketed event taking place on September 28^th in New York City’s Central Park. They will join other acts such as Queen, Pharrell Williams, Alicia Keys, and OneRepublic. For tickets and more information, visit the event’s website.

11) Out actor Billy Porter will direct the world premiere of The Purists, a play written by Dan McCabe. The story follows a group of creatives in Queens, New York. The show will begin performances on Friday, August 30; open on Wednesday, September 11; and run through Sunday, September 29 at the Calderwood Pavillion of the Boston Center of the Arts. 12) Brooklyn-based filmmaker Khaula Malik has a new project in the works. The documentary titled The Noble Half follows the story of three Pakistani trans women, Bubbli, Eshaa, and Sharmeeli, as they build a thriving community running a cafeteria for an arts university, and face challenges when the cafeteria is forced to close. The film explores the khwaja-sera community in Pakistan, and the lingering marginalization from British colonialism. Read more about the project and donate at the film’s Kickstarter page.
