The GLAAD Wrap: First looks at ‘Batwoman,’ season two of ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ new videos from Brandi Carlile and Kim Petras, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Out actress Kristen Stewart has been cast as a lead in an upcoming film inspired by the works and letters of William Burroughs. The film will follow a love triangle between Burroughs (director Ben Foster), his muse, Joan (Stewart), and an American named Allerton (Tom Glynn-Carney).

2) The first teaser has been released for The CW’s upcoming Batwoman, which was officially picked up to series this week. The teaser shows the first glimpse of the history-making lesbian hero, played by out actor Ruby Rose. The show is expected to premiere this fall on The CW.

3) Out actress Amandla Stenberg has been cast in the upcoming Netflix musical show The Eddy. She will play Julie, the teenage daughter of main character Elliot, who shows up suddenly in Paris and forces him to face his past. The show is expected to premiere in 2020. In other Netflix news, the streaming service has announced a 2020 interactive special of their show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Out actor Tituss Burgess will return to play gay character Titus in the “choose your own adventure” special.

4) A trailer for the second season of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It was released on Thursday. The trailer shows pansexual protagonist Nola’s continuing journey with her art, as well as her new relationship with Opal. The season will be released on May 24 on Netflix. Netflix also debuted the trailer for season three of Designated Survivor, which they picked up after its ABC cancellation. The trailer has the introduction of a new character played by trans actress Jamie Clayton, as well as a glimpse of new queer characters. 5) NBC has ordered a new comedy from Kal Penn and Mike Schur called Sunnyside, which includes out actor and comedian Joel Kim Booster in the main cast. In other TV news, Showtime’s Billions has been renewed for a fifth season; the show includes non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon in the main ensemble, playing non-binary character Taylor Mason. Also renewed is Nickelodeon’s The Loud House, which features multiple queer characters in a show aimed at younger audience. Season five will premiere on May 27.

6) The Critics’ Choice Real TV Award nominations were announced this week, the first for these new awards, which honor the best in nonfiction, unscripted and reality television. Some standout nominees are RuPaul’s Drag Race, Hollywood Game Night, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Queer Eye, which received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Reality Program this year. 7) AM to DM, the morning show from Buzzfeed News, has tapped two new hosts, queer writers Alex Berg and Zach Stafford. Berg has guest hosted and produced AM to DM, while Stafford is Editor-in-Chief of The Advocate. They will start as hosts on May 28.

8) Writer, producer, and director Janet Mock is being honored with the Vanguard Award at the upcoming Split Screens Film Festival. She is being recognized for her work on Pose, and will be given the Award on June 1st at the festival in New York, followed by a screening of her Pose episode “Love is the Message.” For tickets and more information, click here.

9) Out singer and songwriter Brandi Carlile has released a music video for her song “The Mother” off of the Grammy Award-winning album By the Way, I Forgive You. The video is dedicated to mothers everywhere, and shows many different mothers and families, including several queer families. Watch the video below.

10) Kim Petras released a new single “Blow It All” with an accompanying lyric video. The song is available to stream here, and watch the video below!

11) Non-binary singer and songwriter Grayson released their EP today, Head to Head. They also released an accompanying music video for their single “Cherry Pits.” Stream the EP here, and watch the video below.

12) Queer creator AJ Knight is crowdfunding to shoot a pilot for his comedy series Daisy Boy, which follows a high school boy in the South who is closeted, but lives in his head as unapologetically flamboyant and fearless. The show is aimed to show queer kids, especially in the South, the power of being one’s authentic self. Click here to learn more information and contribute to the project.
