APPEALS COURT LIFTS BARRIER TO DISCRIMINATORY TRUMP-PENCE TRANSGENDER TROOP BAN: It will go into effect April 12. Said HRC’s Sarah McBride (@SarahEMcBride): “It is unconscionable that the harm of this ban will begin even while cases continue to make their way through the courts. This ban will needlessly put transgender service members in danger, many of whom are deployed in combat zones. HRC will never stop fighting alongside coalition partners to defend the rights of LGBTQ service members.” Read more at Axios.
ED SEC BETSY DEVOS REFUSES TO SAY WHETHER LGBTQ CHILDREN SHOULD BE PROTECTED FROM DISCRIMINATION: During a congressional hearing, she repeatedly sidestepped direct yes-or-no questions from Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.). Said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy (@david_stacy): “From day one of this administration, Betsy DeVos has undermined the safety, dignity, and civil rights of LGBTQ students. Sadly, it is not the least surprising that the Secretary of Education is unwilling to give a direct answer on whether or not she thinks discrimination against students based on their sexual orientation or gender identity is wrong.” More from The Hill.
