The GLAAD Wrap: ‘TransMilitary’ on iTunes, new videos from Troye Sivan, Kehlani, ‘Overwatch’ confirms second queer character, and more!

Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!

1) The award-winning documentary TransMilitary is now currently available to rent or buy on iTunes. The documentary is the first feature length project to receive completion funding from the GLAAD Media Institute and follows several transgender service members. The film has received critical praise, including winning the Audience Award at SXSW in 2018. There are currently and estimated 15,500 transgender people serving in the U.S. military, making this documentary is more relevant than ever. Rent or buy TransMilitary here.

2) Casting was announced this week for a new as-yet untitled film from out Carol director, Todd Haynes. The film will follow the legal drama of the lawuit against DuPont chemical company. Mark Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway, and Tim Robbins are set to star, with out actor Victor Garber in a supporting role. In other film news, The Favourite leads BAFTA nominations with 12 total including Best Film and Outstanding British Film (the only production to be nominated in both). Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born both picked up seven nominations. Can You Ever Forgive Me? star Melissa McCarthy is nominated in Leading Actress, with co-star Richard E. Grant nominated in Supporting Actor; both characters are gay. The documentary McQueen, about out fashion designer Alexander McQueen, picked up a nomination in Outstanding British Film. GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, named The Favourite Film of the Year for its Dorian Awards, with Can You Ever Forgive Me? picking up LGBTQ Film of the Year. 3) A trailer was released for the new Netflix comedy Russian Doll, created by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and out filmmaker Leslye Headland. In the trailer, Lyonne’s character is seen reliving the same party over and over again after she keeps dying. There is also a glimpse of her queer friends, played by Greta Lee and Headland’s wife, Rebecca Henderson. Russian Doll will be released February 1 on Netflix.

4) The full length trailer for Season 3 of GLAAD Media Award-nominated comedy One Day at a Time was released this week. The show follows a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles, including lesbian daughter Elena. The new trailer promises the return of both the humor and real world issues addressed in the show. One Day at a Time returns on February 8 on Netflix.

5) An official music video has been released for pansexual singer Janelle Monáe’s song “Screwed (ft Zoe Kravitz)” off of last year’s Grammy-nominated Dirty Computer. The video also stars out actress Tessa Thompson, who appears in several of Monáe’s videos as well as the Dirty Computer “Emotion Picture” released with the album. Watch the video for “Screwed” below, which was part of last year’s longer film.

6) Out singer and GLAAD Media Award recipient Troye Sivan released a music video for his song “Lucky Strike” off of last year’s Bloom. The video shows Sivan’s summer romance with a bartender he spots at the beach. Check it out below.

7) Queer singer Kehlani also released a new single and video on Thursday. The new song, “Nights Like This (ft. Ty Dolla $ign),” is accompanied by a video with a science fiction twist. The singer has said that she began working on a new full length album this past fall, but hinted that before that, she will release a mix tape in February.

8) Out bi musician Lauren Jauregui has released a new solo single “More Than That,” the follow up to her debut solo single “Expectations,” which was released last fall. Her debut solo album is expected later this year. Check out “More Than That” below.

9) Sam Smith also released a new track, a collaboration with former Fifth Harmony member Normani. The song, “Dancing with a Stranger,” is available for purchase and streaming on digital platforms now. Check it out, below. An official music video is said to be forthcoming.

10) The massively popular Blizzard first person shooter video game Overwatch this week released a new lore update in the tie-in short story, Bastet, which confirms the second LGBTQ character in the franchise. In the story, Soldier: 76 – aka Jack Morrison – looks back at an old photo of himself and his previous partner Vincent as he talks about the sacrifices he has had to make for his mission. Writer Michael Chu confirmed the romantic relationship on Twitter, saying, “Jack and Vincent were in a romantic relationship many years ago. Both identify as gay.”  Previously, Tracer, a fan favorite character, was revealed to be a lesbian in the tie-in comic Reflections. In other gaming news, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, is among the Writers Guild Award nominees. The game made headlines for allowing same-sex romance options.
