Must-See LGBTQ TV: New seasons of ‘Empire,’ ‘Star,’ and ‘How to Get Away with Murder,’ series premiere of ‘The Cool Kids’

Grab the remote, set your DVR or queue up your streaming service of choice! GLAAD is bringing you the highlights LGBTQ on TV this week. Check back every Sunday for up-to-date coverage in LGBTQ-inclusive programming on TV.

This Wednesday, Fox’s two flagship Lee Daniels-series, Empire and Star, return for new seasons. The new season of Empire will take place two years in the future, and the season promises a new love interest for Jamal.  Season three of Star will also have a slight time-jump, though only three months. Star features many queer characters, and one of the only regular trans characters on broadcast television, Cotton, played by trans actress Amiyah Scott. Empire: Wednesday, 8pm on Fox. Star: Wednesday, 9pm on Fox.

The fifth season of How to Get Away with Murder premieres this Thursday on ABC. The show features a rich ensemble of queer characters, including bisexual lead Annalise Keating, played by Viola Davis. In the Season 5 premiere, Annalise selects students for her new legal clinic at Middleton and juggles job offers from competing firms, all while the “Keating 4” attempt to move on from last semester’s turmoil. And, in a flash-forward, a new mystery is introduced and it shakes things up for everyone. How to Get Away with Murder: Thursday, 10pm on ABC.

On Friday, the new Fox sitcom The Cool Kids has its series premiere. The show follows four rowdy friends in a retirement community. One of the main four characters is an out gay man named Sid, played by gay actor and comedian Leslie Jordan, who recently hosted GLAAD’s San Francisco Gala. The show follows Sid, and the rest of the cast including David Alan Grier, Vicki Lawrence, and Martin Mull, as they get up to hijinks. The Cool Kids: Friday, 8:30pm on Fox.
