The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Love Simon’ wins Best Kiss at MTV Awards, trailer for ‘Skate Kitchen,’ new videos from St. Vincent and Halsey, and more!
1) A new trailer has been released for the upcoming film, Skate Kitchen, which premiered at this years Sundance film festival. The film, which includes a lesbian character in the ensemble, follows a teen who finds her home in an all-girl skateboarding group after she has a falling-out with her mother. Watch the trailer below which features a brief glimpse of a romance between two of the girls in the group. Skate Kitchen hits limited theaters on August 10.
2) Netflix’s show Dear White People is renewed for a third season. Highlighting issues of race, sexuality, and other forms of discrimination, the show follows black students in a predominately white Ivy League university. The series provides representation for a range of these characters, including breakout character Lionel, and other queer people of color. Featuring out comedians Sabrina Jalees and Sam Jay, the special that will premiere on July 3 highlights eight comedians as they each perform 15 minute stand-up sets. Watch the trailer below.
3) In the new Starz series, Now Apocalypse, Avan Jogia is set to play the love interest to Tyler Posey’s character, Ulysses, after the two connect over a dating app. The series, from out co-creator Gregg Araki, tells the story of Ulysses and his friends as they deal with finding love and fame in Los Angeles. Additionally, Netflix’s The Crown added out actor Ben Daniels to the cast, after a time jump that sets the story for season 3. Daniels will play the aged photographer Lord Snowden in the critically acclaimed biographical series about the UK’s Queen Elizabeth II.
4) Out actor Denis O’Hare is confirmed for a recurring role in the second season of HBO’s series, Big Little Lies. O’Hare will play a new character in the Emmy Award-winning series about the lives of three women who become involved in a murder investigation. In more casting news, out actress known for her role in Wonder Woman, Elena Anaya, is cast along many others in the new drama series Jett. After being released from prison, thief Daisy “Jett” Kowalski is forced back into the world of crime after being exploited by dangerous criminals.

6) Queer singer St. Vincent released a video for her single “Fast Slow Disco”, a new remix of her song “Slow Disco” off the album Masseduction. 7) In other music news, queer-trans singer known from the Berlin underground music scene, SOPHIE, released her debut album titled Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Click here to listen to the album. 8) Out singer Scott Hoying of Pentatonix teamed up with artists FRANKIE and One Night for a new single along with a Grease-inspired video titled “Ghost”. The video, which also stars out actor Clark Moore, pays homage to the classic musical in a gender role reversal of the greaser gang T-Birds and the Pink Ladies. Watch the video below. Out singer Bobby Newberry released a new video for his single “Lit” featuring Aleff. Previous contestant of Drag Race, drag queen Laganja Estranja, makes an appearance in the “Lit” video and you can watch it below.Out singer Aiden James also released a new video for his single, “Colorblind.”
9) The TCA (Television Critics Association) have officially released nominees for the 2018 awards. Several nominees were LGBTQ-inclusive including Netflix’s comedy One Day at a Time, and popular reality reboot Queer Eye, as well as This is Us, The Handmaid’s Tale, and more. 10) More awards news includes winners for the MTV Movie and TV Awards. In addition to out actress and writer Lena Waithe winning the Trailblazer Award, winners include Loving Simon winning the Best Kiss for the scene with Nick Robinson and out actor Keiynan Lonsdale and documentary about queer star Lady Gaga titled Gaga: Five Foot Two for Best Music Documentary. 11) A new dating and community-building app for lesbians, queer-trans, non-binary queers, and others who have been marginalized in the LGBTQ community is seeking funding. Called Personals, the app brings members of the LGBTQ community together through written messages and provides a platform for queer people who often are silenced such as queer POC, queer people from rural areas, people with disabilities, asexual folks, and more.
