HRC MARKS TWO YEARS SINCE DEADLY PULSE NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING IN ORLANDO, COMMITS TO ‘HONOR VICTIMS WITH ACTION’: Today, HRC will honor the lives of the 49 people — most of them young, LGBTQ and Latinx — killed in the LGBTQ nightclub attack two years ago with a moment of silence at the HRC headquarters. The shooting, which took place in the Orlando LGBTQ nightclub on Latinx Night, became the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, tragically surpassed last year by the Las Vegas concert shooting. HRC RESPONDS TO DANGEROUS SCOTUS RULING — IT COULD “DISENFRANCHISE MILLIONS OF VOTERS ACROSS NATION”: The Supreme Court of the United States yesterday ruled 5-4 in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute that states can purge voters from the rolls solely on the basis of infrequent voting. “The right to vote is the touchstone of our democracy and tactics designed to disenfranchise voters are dangerous to the health of our country,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “We are disappointed that the Supreme Court has upheld a law that could disenfranchise voters in Ohio and lead to similar laws that could disenfranchise millions of voters across the nation.” More from HRC.
TUESDAY TWEET — TAXPAYER FUNDS STILL FLOWING TO CHILD WELFARE AGENCIES THAT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST LGBTQ PEOPLE: “If you’re receiving taxpayer funding, then whether or not you’re able to discriminate shouldn’t even be on the table,” HRC State Legislative Director and Senior Counsel Cathryn Oakley told the Huffington Post’s Dana Liebelson (@dliebelson). This year, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin and Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer signed bills that would allow child welfare organizations to turn away qualified prospective parents seeking to care for a child in need, including LGBTQ couples or other parents to whom the agency has a religious objection.
