Based on the popular novel of the same name, the new Starz show Sweetbitter takes place in the world of restaurants in New York City. It follows protagonist Tess, who lands a job at an upscale New York restaurant. Swiftly introduced to the world of drugs, drinking, love, lust, dive bars and fine dining, she learns to navigate the chaotically alluring, yet punishing life she has stumbled upon. Included in the ensemble cast is Ari, an adventurous lesbian who backwaits by day and DJs by night, and Sasha, a gay man and hard partier who becomes a close friend to Tess. Sweetbitter: Sunday, 8pm on Starz.
Directly after Sweetbitter, Starz’ new drama Vida premieres this Sunday. The series, from queer Latina showrunner Tanya Saracho, follows two sisters who return to gentrified Boyle Heights after their mother passes away. The sisters, one of them bisexual, discover that their mother was in a relationship with butch bartender Eddy, played by non-binary actor Ser Anzoategui. Vida has an all Latinx writers room, with LGBTQ voices in front of and behind the camera and is definitely not one to miss. Vida: Sunday, 8:30pm on Starz.
