#AM_Equality Tipsheet: April 10, 2018

TODAY, IN THE WASH POST — “A ‘DREAMER’ TRAVELED TO MEXICO. NOW HE CAN’T GET HOME TO HIS HUSBAND”: The Post’s Catherine Rampell (@crampell) tells the heartbreaking story of Dreamer Marco Villada Garibay, 34, who has lived in the U.S. since age six and “left the country on the U.S. government’s promise of a possible green card. Now he’s trapped in Mexico and might never be allowed to return.” Writes Rampell: “This is where he went to school; where he worked and paid taxes; and, most significantly, where he met his husband, Israel Serrato.” Read Rampell’s piece in The Washington Post.

  • #BringMarcoBack — The National Immigration Law Center and the firm Mayer Brown are filing a federal lawsuit today challenging the consulate’s decision barring Garibay from returning to his home.  Supporters are also gathering signatures on a petition to #BringMarcoBack home. More information at BringMarcoBack.org.
  • PRESS CALL TODAY: Villada, Serrato, National Immigration Law Center Executive Director Marielena Hincapié, HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow and others will hold a conference call today at 1 PM ET. Please contact [email protected] for call-in details.

HRC URGES SENATE TO REJECT NOMINATION OF MIKE POMPEO AS SECRETARY OF STATE: In a letter to the Senate, HRC joined the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and partner organizations in calling on senators to reject the nomination of Pompeo based on his “troubling history of statements and policy positions that have alienated marginalized communities.” Said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin): “Mike Pompeo’s record demonstrates a grave threat to the safety and dignity of women, LGBTQ people and Muslims. His time in Congress was spent fighting to dismantle crucial reproductive healthcare access. He opposed the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and sought to block non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. He called the landmark Obergefell decision an ‘abuse of power.’ He has a history of disturbing Islamophobic comments. We urge the Senate to oppose Pompeo and reject this effort by Donald Trump and Mike Pence to appoint an extremist as our nation’s chief diplomat.” More from The Washington Blade.
