GLAAD would like to #AskPompeo
Leading into Mike Pompeo’s upcoming confirmation hearing for the position of Secretary of State, GLAAD has started a campaign to expose his close association with a known anti-LGBTQ hate group and his personal anti-LGBTQ record. An anti-LGBTQ activist is not qualified to be our country’s top diplomat and GLAAD is certainly not going to be silent about this! In fact, we are already on the move!

This morning, GLAAD Campus Ambassador, Tony Hernandez, along with photographer Roberto Nava-Alsina, took to Capitol Hill with research we conducted on Mike Pompeo and his connections to the anti-LGBTQ hate group, Family Research Council, informing the 21 members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations of who Pompeo really is and what it would mean for the country for him to become Secretary of State. We’re urging them to confront Pompeo about his personal connections to anti-LGBTQ hate and extremism at his confirmation hearing and vote against his nomination.
The hate group that Pompeo has worked closely with, Family Research Council, has been seen lobbying against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, marriage equality, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and more. They even lobbied against America’s resolution to denounce Uganda’s “kill the gays bill.”
Pompeo has also made it his own personal agenda to oppose the LGBTQ equality. He was against the repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Act from the start and has vowed to fight against marriage equality, abortion rights, and other LGBTQ matters “each and every day.” He even showed distaste towards same sex parents, calling them less “ideal” families.

Is this really someone we want as our Secretary of State?
GLAAD is taking action and so should you! Join this fight and push back against Mike Pompeo’s nomination for Secretary of State, by joining the conversation using #AskPompeo. Ask him yourself, does he believe LGBTQ rights are Human Rights? Does he believe protecting the rights of LGBTQ people abroad is an important aspect of U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy? These are questions that need to be answered.
