STATE LAWMAKERS EMPHASIZE CRUCIAL NEED TO PASS THE PENNSYLVANIA FAIRNESS ACT: Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and state lawmakers reiterated the need to pass SB 613, the Pennsylvania Fairness Act. “We welcome these renewed calls to pass the Pennsylvania Fairness Act, which would extend equal and comprehensive non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ Pennsylvanians,” said HRC Pennsylvania State Manager Allison Van Kuiken. “But Governor Wolf and the bill’s cosponsors cannot drive progress alone. For too long, lawmakers in the General Assembly have refused to take action to protect the thousands of LGBTQ Pennsylvanians at risk of losing their jobs or being denied services simply because of who they are.” More from HRC.
COLORADO HOUSE PASSES BILL TO PROTECT LGBTQ YOUTH FROM “CONVERSION THERAPY”: The Colorado House of Representatives passed legislation to protect LGBTQ youth in the state from the dangerous and debunked practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” The crucially important bill now heads to the Senate for consideration. “No child should be subjected to this dangerous and debunked practice condemned by every major medical and mental health organization,” said HRC Legislative Counsel Xavier Persad. “Right now, it’s incredibly important that fair-minded voices across the state of Colorado speak out and demand the Senate pass this crucially important legislation. Young LGBTQ Coloradans deserve to live their lives authentically and should never be subjected to the abusive practice of so-called conversion therapy.” More from HRC.
HRC CLOSELY MONITORING RESULTS ON ANCHORAGE PROP 1: Mail-in voting on an effort to roll back the city’s non-discrimination protections for transgender people ended on Tuesday, and as the votes continue to come in, it’s looking more and more like this vicious ballot measure has failed. HRC was proud to work on the ground alongside our Fair Anchorage coalition partners, leading transgender advocates, and Equality Voters across Anchorage. A significant number of faith and business leaders also spoke out against this dangerous, anti-transgender ballot measure.
