Billy Porter’s empowering new video calls for resistance in Trump era

Tony and Grammy Award-winning performer Billy Porter has released a bold new video for “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair,” featuring images of empowerment and resistance amid a hostile political climate threatening to roll back progress.

Change is possible during such difficult times, a message the Broadway star stresses, closing the video with calls to resist and vote.

In interwoven footage, Porter speaks about the progress on the bumpy road to equality and acceptance — having faced challenges growing up poor, black, and gay in Pittsburgh, to later marrying his now-husband Adam Smith – arriving at a sudden halt with Trump’s election. Among the footage included is Porter’s acceptance speech at the GLAAD Media Awards in 2017. There, he received the Vito Russo Award, which is presented to an openly LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance.

The single is off of Billy Porter Presents: The Soul of Richard Rodgers, a Sony Masterworks-released album featuring soulful takes on classic Richard Rodgers songs alongside spoken messages about acceptance.
