GLAAD statement on passing of Edith Windsor
Windsor was plaintiff in landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, which struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), paved way for historic marriage equality case in 2015
NEW YORK – Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD – the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today released the following statement after reports confirmed that Edith Windsor passed away at the age of 88. Windsor was the plaintiff in the landmark Windsor v. United States case – which effectively struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and paved the way for nationwide marriage equality in 2015.
“Edie Windsor is a legend who changed the course of history for the better. She touched countless lives, and we at GLAAD are deeply saddened by her passing, but her kindness, compassion, and legacy will endure.”
LGBTQ advocates and organizations are planning a vigil for Edie outside of the Stonewall Inn in New York City tonight.
