Women’s March on Washington Facebook Event

The Women’s March on Washington, taking place this Saturday, January 21 in Washington D.C., is expected to attract nearly one million people to rally and march in solidarity for equality, acceptance, diversity, and safety. More than 600 “sister marches” will also be taking place throughout the nation, as well as worldwide, the same day as a way for people everywhere to take action.

GLAAD is an official partner of the Women’s March on Washington and GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis will be speaking at the Women’s March in Los Angeles. Additional members of GLAAD’s team will be participating on the ground across the country, in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.

 

 

Here are details for joining Saturday’s rally and march:

WHEN: Rally goes from 10:00 AM to 1:15 PM, at which time the march begins on Saturday, January 21, 2017.

WHERE: The rally starting point is at the intersection of Independence Avenue and SW Third Street in Washington, D.C.

WHO: People from around the world will be attending the event, which does not require tickets. The list of notable speakers includes Cecile Richards (Planned Parenthood Federation of America), Ilyasah Shabazz, Janet Mock, Angela Davis, Gloria Steinem, Melissa Harris-Perry, Van Jones, Mothers of the Movement, and many more accomplished advocates. The Women’s March co-chairs–Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez, Linda Sarsour, and Bob Bland—will also speak.

WHAT: Unity Principles of the Women’s March include ending violence, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, workers’ rights, civil rights, disability rights, immigrant rights, and environmental justice.

The Women’s March says of the event’s mission:

The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us – immigrants of all statuses, Muslims and those of diverse religious faiths, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault – and our communities are hurting and scared. We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear.

In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.
