HRC Working in Charlotte for Hillary Clinton and Other Pro-Equality Candidates

On Tuesday, HRC staff and volunteers continued our voter mobilization efforts in Charlotte, targeting our efforts in support of Hillary Clinton and other pro-equality candidates.
Our HRC team, including HRC Board of Directors member Scott Bishop, joined efforts to ensure all North Carolina residents are registered to vote before the deadline this Friday. Most of our team had never done voter registration before and received a quick and comprehensive training before heading into the field. Stationed at public shopping locations, we had conversations with potential voters, asking them if they were registered yet, providing polling locations, and making sure they felt prepared to make their voices heard.
One thing was very clear: Voters in North Carolina are ready to get to the polls! Most people were already registered and were quick to express their excitement to make sure Clinton wins the state. Others completed a registration form, “just in case.” Although they recently mailed their registration in, they wanted to make sure nothing stopped them from getting to the polls.
“Can I tell you a secret? I’ve never voted in an election before, but there’s absolutely no way I’m missing this one,” said one voter as she filled out a registration form.
Life can get busy and there are many barriers that get in the way of voting, and that’s why HRC is committed to working across the country in this election to mobilize our members and supporters. At HRC, we know that every vote counts, especially the votes of LGBTQ people and our allies. Today, there are an estimated 255,824 LGBTQ adults living in North Carolina — a substantial population given that the state was won in the last three presidential elections by an average of 180,500 votes. Nearly 90,000 LGBTQ adults live in the Charlotte Metro Area alone. The LGBTQ voting bloc in North Carolina will play a pivotal role in the presidential, gubernatorial and other down ballot races.
