Logo to censor its own content to show what life is like for many LGBTQ people abroad
On October 11th, Logo will symbolically censor LGBTQ content during a marathon of RuPaul’s Drag Race to show support for LGBTQ people living in countries where such content is regularly blocked and coming out can be dangerous. Logo will also showcase facts about international LGBTQ equality throughout the day, which is also National Coming Out Day.
Candis Cayne, Gus Kentworthy, Trace Lysette, Jason Collins, Geena Rocero, Billy Porter, Omar Sharif Jr., JD Samson, Alec Mapa and Bruce Vilanch will all speak out about the 72 countries where being LGBTQ is criminalized and the 10 countries where same-sex relationships can be punishable by death. Activists from Russia, Iran, Singapore and more will appear in videos discussing how media censorship impacts their lives.
The ‘censored’ marathon of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 8 starts at 6am ET/PT. During the marathon, openly LGBTQ contestants and guests will have their eyes blocked by a black bar, drag outfits will be pixelated, and audio bleeps will disrupt LGBTQ content.
The ‘Day of Disruption’ is part of Logo’s Global Ally project, which is committed to raising awareness for global LGBTQ issues.
Viacom, Logo’s parent company, is an official partner of Spirit Day, GLAAD’s annual anti-bullying campaign. Logo’s Global Ally campaign sponsors Spirit Day’s international outreach, including making the Spirit Day Resource Kit available in seven languages.
Spirit Day is October 20th this year, and millions will go purple to take a stand against bullying and show support for LGBTQ youth. Take the pledge to go purple.
