Emmy Awards Breakdown: LGBTQ Actors, Allies and LGBTQ-Centric Shows Could Win Big

LGBTQ history could be made at the 68th Emmy Awards this weekend. From LGBTQ and allied actors to groundbreaking television shows, here’s who HRC is rooting for:

  • Transparent: The hit Amazon show. which follows the transition and story of a transgender mother, received 10 nominations. Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light and Gaby Hoffman were all nominated, as was the show’s creator Jill Soloway. Light is a longtime HRC supporter and her co-star, Kathryn Hahn, received an HRC Ally for Equality award in May.
  • The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and American Horror Story: Hotel: Longtime HRC supporter and LGBTQ advocate Ryan Murphy, who  produced both shows, is nominated for Outstanding Directing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Dramatic Special and Outstanding Limited Series for The People v. O.J. Simpson. Earlier this year, Murphy and Ned Martel, with the support of their colleagues at Ryan Murphy Television, released a special tribute video, Stop the Hate, with HRC to the 49 victims of the Orlando shooting at Pulse nightclub on Latin night. Several actors who appeared in the Stop the Hate video, including Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Cuba Gooding Jr. and executive producer Nina Jacobson, are nominated.
  • Lily Tomlin:  Tomlin, who is openly lesbian, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for Grace and Frankie.
  • Tig Notaro: Notaro, who is also openly lesbian, is nominated for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special for Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted.
  • Tituss Burgess: Burgess, who is openly gay, is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
  • HRC Allies: Several HRC supporters and allies, including Kerry Washington, Bryan Cranston, Audra McDonald, Felicity Huffman and Allison Janney, are nominated.

Last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys, RuPaul won Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program for RuPaul’s Drag Race.  Her Story, which was nominated for Outstanding Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series, lost to Childrens Hospital at the Creative Emmys. Her Story is a groundbreaking YouTube series that tells the story of several transgender and queer women, including transgender advocate Angelica Ross, who has partnered with HRC on projects, and Jen Richards, who co-wrote, co-executive produced and co-starred in the series. Ned Martel also won Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series for Inside Look: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story at the Creative Arts Emmys.
