Nashville star Connie Britton presented the award for Outstanding TV Journalism: Newsmagazine to Diane Sawyer and Caitlyn Jenner at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at New York’s Waldorf Astoria.

In April 2015, Jenner shared her story on a Diane Sawyer special edition of ABC’s 20/20. Touching on subjects like her childhood and family, Jenner explained she had always been aware of her identity as a woman and was ready to live her life authentically.

The groundbreaking interview also shined a spotlight on issues facing the transgender community, highlighting the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation, and providing viewers with online educational resources.

The special drew huge ratings, with 16.9 million viewers tuning in (ultimately reaching 22 million by week’s end), and it also sparked dialogue on social media, with 972,000 tweets largely supportive of Jenner.

Jennifer Lawrence presented the Excellence in Media Award to Robert De Niro. Lee Daniels presented the Ally Award to Mariah Carey. Laverne Cox hosted the event. Bebe Rexha performed, as did actor and singer Alex Newell, and Fun Homes Kally Duling and Emily Skeggs.
