What’s at Stake in the 2016 Legislative Session
This year brought many ups and down for the LGBT community. Though marriage equality won at the U.S. Supreme Court, state lawmakers also introduced more than 115 anti-LGBT bills during the legislative session. The largest number of these bills were aimed to authorize individuals, businesses and taxpayer-funded agencies to cite religion as a reason to refuse goods or services to LGBT people.
Other anti-LGBT bills sought to restrict restroom usage by transgender people and to eliminate the ability of local governments to protect their LGBT residents and visitors.
And though we won many of these battles in 2015, the fight isn’t over. Forty-seven legislatures will be in session in 2016. And many state legislatures have provisions that allow bills introduced in 2015 to carry over into 2016 if they were neither enacted nor defeated. Thus, many of the more than 115 anti-LGBT bills introduced this year are still pending and we expect new anti-equality bills to be introduced in other states.
This year, as in 2015, HRC will work to defeat the anti-LGBT bills cropping up state by state, by we need your help. Make the fight for LGBT equality your new year’s resolution.
