#Bestof2015: HRC’s Groundbreaking Work in the South Moves Equality Forward

As part of Project One America and HRC’s ongoing effort to advance LGBT equality in the South, HRC Mississippi, HRC Alabama and HRC Arkansas have been working nonstop to expand LGBT equality and visibility.

Each state held a groundbreaking statewide Equality Summit, a full-day community building and volunteer-engagement training brought together pro-equality advocates, helping to bolster volunteer outreach and collaboration while empowering allies and supporters on the ground. People from all walks of life, including politicians, pastors, educators, students, churchgoers, activists, organizers and allies, joined the conversation on how to create full, authentic equality for all Southerners, specifically those who are LGBT.

Each state held events at college campuses and with religious communities. The staff met with friends, families, teachers, students and business professionals, working to create LGBT inclusive and safe spaces. HRC provided resources and support for members of the LGBT community and offices in each state were used as a place where community members could meet other LGBT people.

As we begin a new year, HRC is committed to expanding LGBT equality in the South. Like with most of our work, we know that this does not happen in a day or in a week or even a year. We are dedicated through and through to creating visibility, awareness, acceptance and understanding for LGBT people in towns across Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas.

Counting down to 2016, HRC is celebrating our greatest milestones and victories in 2015. It has been another incredible year for LGBT equality and we could not have done it without you — our members, readers and supporters–and we look forward to continuing our work in 2016. Stay tuned for more highlights from 2015.
