Newly Elected Louisiana Governor to Take Action to Protect LGBT State Employees

According to The Times-Picayune,  newly elected Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has committed to issuing an executive order that would protect LGBT state employees and government contractors from firing, discrimination and harassment.

“The Edwards’ transition team did not provide a timeline for when the order might be issued,” The Times-Picayune reported. “The governor-elect told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune directly a few weeks ago that he planned to sign such a document after he takes office. Two LGBT advocacy groups said Edwards has made similar commitments to them as well.”

According to HRC’s 2014 State Equality Index, which provides a review of statewide laws and policies that affect LGBT people and their families, Louisiana has a high priority to achieve basic equality.

Bel Edwards won in a runoff election last month. He will be sworn in on January 11, 2016.

This race, like we have seen in others across the country, is another powerful reminder that in order to pass of fair-minded policies and legislation, every vote truly does counts.
