TV Station Faces Backlash After Airing Anti-Same Sex Marriage Ad
An Australian TV station is facing threats of cancellation from subscribers for what many are claiming is an anti-gay marriage ad.
The ad comes in response to a large-scale push to legalize same-sex marriage in the country; Australia’s parliament is expected to vote on marriage equality by the end of 2015. The vote could reportedly go either way.
The ad, which discuss how same-sex marriage could affect others, ran on the Foxtel network, a “pay TV provider,” and was produced and released by the anti-gay Marriage Alliance. Strangely, the spot ran alongside a showing of “I Am Cait,” the reality show documenting the transition of former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner.
As The Sydney Morning Herald reports, customers are taking to Facebook and other social media to show their displeasure with the channel. Foxtel, however, continues to claim that the company is a strong supporter of marriage equality.
According to Yahoo UK & Ireland, two other networks in Australia refused to run the Marriage Alliance ad.
