Norway plans to allow trans kids as young as seven to change legal gender
Transgender people in Norway will no longer have to undergo genital surgery and be sterilized when they change their legal gender under proposed legislation from the Norwegian Government.
If passed into law the bill would make Norway one of the most progressive countries in the world when it comes to transgender rights by allowing children as young as seven to assert their gender identity and have that reflected legally – provided their parents agree to it.
Children over sixteen will be allowed to change their legal gender without parental consent.
However while transgender children will be able to change their gender for legal purposes they will not be allowed to undergo any kind of surgery related to sex change before they turn eighteen – nor will any surgery be compulsory once they become adults.
Norway was an early pioneer in allowing people to change their legal gender – provided they were given psychiatric evaluation and underwent a full surgical sex change with sterilization – but the legal arrangements for transgender people had not been updated in six decades.
As a result, Norway had found its treatment of transgender people lagging behind most of Western Europe.
‘This is an important area where Norway has lagged far behind many other countries for many years,’ Health Minister Bent Høie said, announcing the proposed changes at an event at the Oslo Europride festival in late June.
‘Now we can be proud that we are implementing this law.’
