A Sense of Belonging

A Sense of Belonging

Last month was Pride Month and I didn’t say a whole bunch about it. The truth is, it’s never really felt “mine”. This was going to be the year that I tried to connect with it, but the usual celebrations were not open to me due to Covid, so instead I used this energy to re-educate myself of the origins of Pride.

My queerness is not something I talk about often and it’s not something I’ve felt the need to announce (expect perhaps to my immediate family, gotta set expectations). If I’ve casually talked about being bisexual in front of you, that was me coming out. That’s all you get. You’re welcome.

Heterosexuality is often assumed; I am straight passing and until last year, my sexuality was further masked by being in an opposite sex relationship. I am often pigeon-holed into a hetero-normative box, but recently I have found that I am equally frustrated by being put into a “gay” box as well. I cannot display my sexuality through my choice of partner nor how I style myself (which I’ve been told is somewhere between Victorian adventurer/detective and woodland Witch) and bi-erasure is something that I’m struggling with increasingly.

I am not afraid my sexuality. But more and more I feel like it should not just be something that is accepted, but also acknowledged and even celebrated. Pride is for all of the LGBTQ+ community, including me and I need to work on my sense of belonging.

Happy (late) Pride to all my queer followers. You are loved.
