The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Birds of Prey’ in theaters, new music from Trixie Mattel; Taylor Bennett; and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) New DC film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) opens today in theaters. The film follows a group of women teaming up in Gotham City, lead by bisexual character Harley Quinn. One of the members of the team is lesbian detective Renee Montoya. The film is playing everywhere this weekend; click here for tickets.

I Carry You With Me2) As the Sundance Film Festival wrapped, awards were given out to many of the outstanding films, including several queer-inclusive films. Drama I Carry You with Me – which was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics – received the Next Audience Award as well as the Next Innovator Prize. Documentary Welcome to Chechnya was awarded the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Editing. Queer-inclusive film The 40-Year-Old Version also received the U.S. Dramatic award for Directing, as well as distribution from Netflix. Also, GLAAD-nominated feature film Adam, directed by Rhys Ernst, which premiered last year at Sundance, is now available to stream exclusively on Hulu.

3) The first look at the second season of GLAAD Media Award nominee High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was released on Wednesday. The video teaser shows the cast, including gay characters Seb and Carlos, performing the title song from Beauty and the Beast. In more TV news, the WGA Awards were held last weekend and included wins for queer inclusive series: Ryan O’Connell’s Special in Original Short Form New Media and Watchmen in New Series. 4) The teaser has been released for Sasha Velour’s new Quibi series, NightGowns. The docuseries follows Velour as she stages the show NightGowns, with local queer and underground talent. Watch the trailer below. Quibi has also picked up new talk show Pillow Talk with Demi Lovato where the singer will have unfiltered conversations with a variety of guests.

5) CBS has picked up a pilot from Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick. The show, Please Hold for Frankie Wolfe, follows a businesswoman forced to care for a foster child. A trailer has been released for the third season of NBC’s Good Girls. The show which stars Isaiah Stannard as Annie’s son who is transgender. Good Girls will premiere on Sunday, February 16. 6) Out singer Adam Lambert announced his newest album this week, Velvet, which will be his fourth LP. He released the first single “Roses,” featuring Nile Rodgers, on Tuesday. Velvet will be released on March 20. Singer and drag queen Trixie Mattel released her newest album Barbara today. Listen to the album here and watch the music video for single “Malibu” below.

7) The soundtrack for Birds of Prey was also released today. It includes songs from out singers Halsey, Lauren Jauregui, and K.Flay. Listen to the album here. On Monday, out artist Kesha released the music video for her song “High Road” off the recently released album of the same name. Watch the music video below!

8) Out bi singer Taylor Bennett released a new single “Good Guy” on Tuesday. Listen to the single here and read his interview about making “Good Guy” here. Out singer and rapper Lil Nas X has released a music video for his remix of “Rodeo” featuring Nas. Watch the video below. Out bi pop singer Anne-Marie released a new single “Birthday” on Friday. 9) Out actor Sean Hayes has been cast in upcoming Chicago play Good Night, as pianist Oscar Levant. The show is scheduled to begin in January 2021. In more theater news, out actress Dot-Marie Jones has been cast in School of Rock as Dennis, the first woman to play the role. New queer play Revenge Song: A Vampire Cowboys Creation will open February 4 in Los Angeles, which follows Julie d’Aubigny and her adventures in 17th century France.

10) The MOONSHINE Look Book is a project created by Imana Gunawan, turning a Seattle-based cabaret into a book of photography. The show includes original dance, music, costumes, visuals, and food by some of the most exciting Seattle-based queer and trans dancers, musicians, and creatives of color.
