The GLAAD Wrap: Josie Totah cast in ‘Saved by the Bell’ reboot; trailers for ‘Sex Education,’ ‘Mrs. America,’ ‘Birds of Prey,’ ‘New Mutants;’ and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The first trailer has been released for New Mutants, the newest X-Men film, surrounding young mutants being trapped in an institution. The trailer also teases a queer romance between characters Mirage (Blue Hunt) and Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams). Check out the trailer below and the movie in theaters April 3.

2) Out playwright Jeremy O. Harris, the writer of GLAAD Media Award-nominated play Slave Play, will be adapting graphic novel The New World into a film for Warner Bros. The New World is a science fiction adventure that follows two lovers on the run in the The New World order. In more Warner Bros. news, a new trailer for upcoming Birds of Prey, featuring queer characters Renee Montoya and Harley Quinn, has been released; watch it below.

3) Freeform has set a premiere date for its road trip Valentine’s Day Movie, The Thing About Harry. The film stars out actor Jake Borelli as Sam, an out gay man who was bullied in highs school who is forced to take a road trip with his former nemesis Harry (Niko Terho). It will premiere on February 15 on Freeform.

4) Josie Totah, an out trans actress known for Champions has been cast as the lead in the Saved By the Bell sequel coming so to the NBC streaming service Peacock. Totah will play Lexi, the most popular girl ad Bayside High, both admired and feared by her fellow students. In more TV news, a trailer has been released for the second season of GLAAD Media Award-nominated comedy Sex Education. The trailer introduces a new love interest for gay character Eric. The second season will be released in full on Netflix on January 17.

5) On Tuesday, the CW renewed all of its current series for another season. This includes LGBTQ-inclusive series Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lighting, Batwoman, Riverdale, Legacies, Dynasty, All American, Nancy Drew, Charmed and Roswell, New Mexico. The network also ordered thirteen new episodes of new series Katy Keene, which will premiere on February 7. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has released a music video for promo of Part 3 of the series. 6) A first look has been released for Visible: Out on Television, a new docuseries from Apple TV+. The five-part series follows the importance of LGBTQ representation on TV. It premieres on February 14, watch the trailer below. In further news, ahead of its third season airing BBC America has already renewed GLAAD Media Award-nominated drama Killing Eve for a fourth season. 

7) A trailer has been released for Mrs. America, the new limited series from FX about conservative Phyllis Schlafly trying to stop the feminist movement. The trailer shows a glimpse of queer women and stars out actress Sarah Paulson. Paulson has also been confirmed for the tenth season of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story, which was renewed for three more seasons this week.

8) Out bisexual singer Halsoy has released a new single and video “You Should Be Sad.” The song, with a bit of country twang, will be featured on her new album Manic, which will be released on January 17. Watch the music video below!

9) It was announced on Thursday that Trevor: The Musical will head to Off-Broadway this spring. The music on the Academy Award-winning short film Trevor about a young gay teen, and the basis of the organization The Trevor Project. The musical will open in April of this year at Stage 42. In more theater news, out The Nanny co-creator Peter Marc Jacobson will be reuiniting with Fran Drescher for a musical The Nanny, with songs written by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star and creator Rachel Bloom. Out Tony Award-winner Benj Pasek and Justin Paul also have a new Broadway project in the works with John Ridley about a family that spans generations. 

10) GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, has named the recipients of their annual Dorian Awards. LGBTQ-inclusive winners include Antonio Banderas for his performance as a gay man in Pain and Glory, two awards for Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Pose, as well as prizes for Booksmart, Scream Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, Billy Porter, The Other Two, The Politician and Lady Gaga. See the full list of nominees and winners here.

11) The nominees for the NAACP Image Awards were announced Thursday, with several LGBTQ and inclusive nominees. These include Billy Porter in Entertainer of the year and for his role on Pose, two nominations forTitus Burgess, Janelle Monae for her role in Harriet, Lil Nas X in two music categories; as well as series grown-ish, Queen Sugar, The Chi, Watchmen, When They See Us, Rhythm + Flow, and Wanda Sykes: Not Normal. 12) The Writers Guild Award nominations for film have been announced. The nominees include GLAAD Media Award nominated film Booksmart in Originial Screenplay. The BAFTA Award nominations have also been announced, which include nominations in various categories for LGBTQ-inlcusive films Rocketman; in Outstanding British Film Relatablo in Outstanding Debut by a British Writer Director or Producer; Pain and Glory and Portrait of a Lady on Fire in Film Not in the English Language; Booksmart in Best Original Screenplay; and more. 13) The Sophomore Comedy Tour is an all LGBTQ+ comedy tour that is currently funding. New York-based queer comedians Gara Lonning, Emily Evans, Dylan Adler and Kate Sisk and Solange Azor are going on an East Coast tour that they want to make as accessible as possible.
