The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ opens in NY and LA; trailers for ‘Twenties’ and ‘AJ and the Queen’; new music from Billy Porter, Adam Lambert, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Out filmmaker Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire opens in limited theaters on Friday, December 6. The film depicts a painter who is sent to paint a bride before her wedding without her knowing, but the two form a deep bond. It will open on Friday in New York and Los Angeles and will be released nationwide on Valentines Day 2020. Click here for tickets  and watch the trailer below.

2) Out actress Jo Ellen Pellman has been cast in the leading role for Netflix and Ryan Murphy’s adaption of musical The Prom. Pellman will play Emma, a high schooler who is banned from bringing her girlfriend to prom and enlists the help of Broadway actors. The film, which also stars Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells, will be released in fall 2020.

3) The trailer has been released for Twenties, Lena Waithe’s new comedy following lesbian twenty-something Hattie and her two best friends Marie and Nia in Los Angeles, as Hattie tries to make it as a TV writer. Watch the trailer below and look out for Twenties premiering in early 2020 on BET, making it the network’s first show with a Black queer woman as the lead. In more TV news, HBO Max has picked up Generation to series, a new teen show that includes queer and trans characters in the ensemble.

4) Netflix has announced a second season premiere for Sex Education, which includes several queer characters, including fan-favorite Eric, in the ensemble. Season two will be released on Netflix on January 17, 2020. The first trailer for Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, a comedy following Nora Lin who is navigating life with her family in Queens, has been released. That family includes out actors BD Wong and Bowen Yang as her dad and cousin, respectively. The show will premiere on January 22 on Comedy Central. Watch the trailer below.

5) The full-length trailer has been released for AJ and The Queen, a new Netflix series starring RuPaul as drag queen Ruby who ends up on a road trip with 8-year-old AJ, after losing everything. The comedy will premiere on January 10, 2020. Watch the trailer below. The first trailer has been released for season five of The Magicians, which will premiere on Syfy on January 15, 2020. The fifth season will follow Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) as they learn to navigate a world without Quentin. Watch the trailer here.

6) The first look has been released for NBC’s new musical comedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, starring Jane Levy as a woman who can hear the inner thoughts of people through them singing. The show also stars out singer and actor Alex Newell. Watch the trailer below. The first photos have been released for Midnight Kiss, the New Year’s Eve installment of Hulu’s horror anthology Into the Dark. The episode follows a group of gay friends in palm springs who unknowingly invite a killer into their group. See the first looks here.

7) The WGA TV nominations were announced on Thursday. Some of the highlights include Ryan O’Connell writing for Special, Sam Jay, Julio Torres and Bowen Yang writing for Saturday Night Live, as well as inclusive series The Handmaid’s Tale, Mindhunter, Russian Doll, Veep, What We Do in the Shadows, and more! 8) Out singer Halsey has announced the track list for her upcoming album Manic, which will be released on January 17. The tracks include features form Alanis Morisette, Dominic Fike, and BTS’s Suga. 9) Out award-winning actor and singer Billy Porter and Idina Menzel released a new Christmas song “I Got My Love to Keep My Warm.” Watch the holiday music video below! Band Torres released a new track this week “Gracious Day” of their upcoming album Silver Tongue. Mackenzie Scott, the lead singer, said the track was written for her girlfriend. 10) New Queer Photography is a collection currently funding. The book will showcase young queer and trans artists and photographers showcasing their queerness, showing a wide variety of identities and what those identities mean to the artists. For more info and to donate, click here.
