Penn Street, Bristol, South West of England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 9th of July 2022.

What is this all about?

I’ve seen more and more photographs, not only on Flickr, but also on any other websites, where they’ve turned a colour photo into black and white photo, but leave a specific subject still in colour.

I tried to find out what is this called, I think it’s called Selective colour. Is it?

I’m used to doing either black and white or colour. During my teenager days, growing up, I used to shoot with black and white film, then process my own films, and do my printing.

For colour, I send the roll of films off for processing, developing and printing. Same with colour slides.

With modern technology like computers and editing application software, they can turn a colour photo into black and white, and yet leave some parts in colour.

I’ve no idea how they do it, I thought to have a go, just for fun. I assume there are many different ways of doing it.

I figure to do it this way: In Photoshop, I selected the flags and created a new layer for it. The new layer is placed on top of the original photo, then I turned the bottom layer into black and white.

Well, here’s my have-a-go work. I think it is kind of okayish, isn’t it?

Anyway, the photograph was taken in Penn Street, just next to the BOSS store, as the sea of people with colourful outfits and flags, continue to march northwards. That was still in the early stage of the Pride parade.

I was looking around for some journalism style photos, spotted this, and thought to take some shots. I wasn’t thinking of turning it into black and white with the flags still in colour, that only happened when I was selecting the photo for upload, and thought, why not have a go.

About the event.

Bristol Pride is an annual festival held over couple of weeks, promoting equality for the various LGBT+ people, with a march through the city at a weekend.

The Bristol Pride started life in 1977 as a fundraiser for the local LGBT community, and evolved into an annual event held every year. There was a gap of only some years between 1994 to 2010 when it was restarted.

The 2022 march started at Castle Park, near Castle Street. The route took them past Cabot Circus, and went around the major shopping area by using The Horsefair and Union Street, and as they went down Union Street, they headed towards Castle Park. When they reached Castle Park, they turned into Wine Street, went into High Street, and into Baldwin Street, headed towards the A38 which is Anchor Road. This route took them into Canon’s Road, and ended up near the Bristol Aquarium.

The march was said to take about an hour, but as a photographer whom would go back and forth, up and down the line, looking for good shots, it took me at least a couple of hours to complete the route.

After the march, those whom bought tickets, can attend an evening musical festival at The Downs, approximately to the north-west of city centre. I did not attend this event, and by the time I got back to my friend’s home, I was worn out from the heat.

The Comment Box is NOT an adverting space or billboard for the groups. You are welcome to comment on the photo, of the subject, or of your similar experience. If you want to promote the groups you are member of, do it in YOUR photos.
