Daily Dose: A Broadway diva tells all…and then some

Welcome to Queerty’s latest entry in our series, Queerantined: Daily Dose. Every weekday as long as the COVID-19 pandemic has us under quarantine, we’ll release a suggested bit of gloriously queer entertainment designed to keep you from getting stir crazy in the house. Each weekend, we will also suggest a binge-able title to keep you extra engaged.

The Tell All: Elaine Stritch At Liberty

Broadway Grand Dame Elaine Stritch found the role of a lifetime in the twilight of her career: herself. Elaine Stritch: At Liberty is both a one-woman show and a career memoir performed by the woman herself. Stritch recounts the story of her life and struggles with alcoholism while performing songs from her musical repertoire. Stritch’s career anecdotes, however, steal the show, as she recalls stories of wild nights with Marlon Brando and Ben Gazzera, interactions with Judy Garland and Ethel Merman, falling for Rock Hudson (and what a bum decision that turned out to be), and life upon the marvelously wicked stage.

Stritch toured the US, played Broadway (where she picked up a long-deserved Tony Award) and London with At Liberty. Lucky for us, the folks over at HBO filmed the production and captured the raw power of Stritch’s performance. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves Broadway and showbiz, not to mention anyone thirsty for a few lessons in survival. Right now, we know you are.

The latest video from Into’s ‘Old Gays’ video series is a real tear-jerker. It features regular contributors Bill Lyons, Jessay Martin, Robert E. Reeves and Michael ‘Mick’ Peterson.

In the video, the men are presented with old photos of their late pets. They are asked to identify the pets and who they belonged to.

Robert recalls his dad’s hunting dogs, and his beloved black labrador, Sheba, so-named because she was “a little black queen.” He says she provided him with great comfort and companionship at a time when he was “expecting to die within a short period of time, and I think her spirit coming into my life may have saved my life.”

Mick wells up recalling his dogs, Hanna and Rocky. He says he thinks about the latter every day, even though Rocky died around 15 years ago. He firmly believes Rocky will be waiting for him on the other side when his time is up.

Jessay remembers Tia, who he also misses greatly: “That was my child. I wish I had her now.”

Bill is the only one who appears not to have owned a cat or dog. “I prefer human animals,” he says, to the amusement of the others. He does say he used to own a big fish tank, but the fish “died too quickly” for him to have any photos of them.

The video ends with the men being presented with a puppy each to hold for a short while, with Mick joking, “You better take it away soon because I’ll bond.” They also offer advice to pet owners and remind people thinking of getting a dog to consider adopting one from a rescue center.

‘Schitt’s Creek’ Star Dan Levy: Think of Mask Wearing as ‘the Simplest, Easiest Act of Kindness You Can Do in a Day’ — WATCH

Schitt’s Creek actor and creator Dan Levy shared a recent Instagram video in which he expressed weariness at seeing people hostile about wearing masks because they see it as a clamp on their freedom.

“I’ve been seeing a lot of viral videos about people who are actively not wearing masks because they perceive it to be an infringement on their freedom,” Levy began. “And I suppose, in a way I can understand the frustration of being told what to do, which is why I would like to propose a re-contextualization of this whole thing.”

“Imagine seeing it not as an infringement on your freedom, but rather the simplest, easiest act of kindness that you can do in a day,” Levy suggested. “Not just for yourself, but for other people who might have autoimmune issues. People who, if they were to contract COVID with those issues might have some devastating repercussions.”

“If you have the freedom to leave your house, if you have the good health to leave your house, why not put on a mask, make it your good deed for the day and do something nice for yourself and other people,” he added.
