Beautiful. Talented. Audacious. Articulate. Sincere. What puny words to describe Janelle Monae.

Monae, of course, is the out-queer musician behind the albums Dirty Computer and The ArchAndroid, which gifted us the awesome tunes “Pynk” and “Make Me Feel,” among others. In addition to her work in music, Monae has also established a successful acting career appearing in films such as Hidden Figures, Harriet and Moonlight.

As if we didn’t have enough reason to love, she’s just taken another huge risk. May 22, Monae takes over for Oscar-winner Julia Roberts in the second season of the Amazon sci-fi series Homecoming. Season 2 revolves around Monae’s character awakening with no memory. Her quest to discover her identity leads her to the Geist Group, a mysterious corporation that has created a drug that can erase memory. Oscar-winner Chris Cooper, Hong Chou, Stephan James and Joan Cusack also star.

We snagged facetime with Monae to talk about her latest acting venture and life as an out celebrity. Homecoming returns to Amazon streaming May 22.

147 People Potentially Exposed to COVID-19 After Two Hairstylists Work While Symptomatic

147 clients and staff at a Great Clips hair salon in Springfield, Missouri were potentially exposed to COVID-19 by two hairstylists who worked while symptomatic last week.

KY3 reports: “Seven co-workers and 84 clients were potentially directly exposed from the first case announced Friday, according to the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. The health department says 56 clients were potentially directly exposed by the second case. These clients will be notified by the health officials and be offered testing.”

The Guardian reports: “Because the stylist and the customers wore face coverings, health officials said on Friday, they hoped the interactions would lead to ‘no additional cases’. Those potentially exposed would be contacted and offered testing, officials said. The potential exposures started little more than a week after Missouri allowed salons to reopen.”

Said Clay Goddard, director of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, at a presser about the first exposure incident: “I’m very frustrated to be up here. And maybe more so, I’m disappointed. I’m going to be honest with you: We can’t have many more of these. “We can’t make this a regular habit or our capabilities as a community will be strained.”

This is the perfect clapback for the idea that gayness is a ‘choice’

Photographer, makeup artist, and activist Matt Bernstein painted his face with nine words that shut down anyone who still weaponizes the belief that homosexuality is a choice.

“If being gay was a choice,” his eye makeup reads, “I’d be gayer.”

The quote — which also adorned a counter-protest sign at a 2019 “straight pride” event in Modesto, California — seems to have originated in a 2016 tweet from comedian and writer Solomon Georgio.

Bernstein, meanwhile, has photographed himself emblazoned with other words of wisdom. Some highlights:

• “Hate dressed in religion is just hate.”
• “Some families are chosen.”
• “What if we loved queer kids as much as we love gender reveals.”
• “Why does style only become trendy once straight, white, cis people catch on?”
• “Gay rights wouldn’t exist without trans women of color.”
