The queer legacy of “How to Get Away with Murder”

ABC

For the last six years, ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” has rolled out some of the most twisted, thrilling, and over-the-top murder-mystery storylines on network television. Fans are getting ready to say goodbye to the series that centers around Annalise Keating, a bisexual law professor played by Viola Davis, and her faithful group of law students. The show’s “whodunit” moments have struck a chord with audiences, prompting many social media hashtags from #WhoKilledSam to #WhoDiedAtTheWedding.  However, no matter how many bloody messes Keating and Co. have cleaned up during the show’s 90-episode run, the series’ lasting legacy will lie in its commitment to creating compelling and diverse LGBTQ storylines.

Ahead of the May 14 series finale, Anthony Ramos, GLAAD’s Head of Talent, spoke to showrunner and creator Pete Nowalk as well as actors Conrad Ricamora and Amirah Vann, who portray queer favorites Oliver Hampton and Teigan Price, respectively.

Oliver is now married to Connor Walsh (played by Jack Falahee) and although the couple is in a much different place than in the beginning, Ricamora says that he thinks their relationship is “the heart of the show.” Then came season two, when we learned that Annalise Keating had a previous long-term relationship with a woman named Eve Rothlo (played by Famke Jansen).  Two seasons later, Annalise finally found “a unicorn” in powerhouse Teigan Price, who was in charge of a high-profile law firm and just happened to be Afro-Latinx and a lesbian.

Looking back on a show that ended up being beloved and embraced for its complex, queer storylines, Nowalk says that, surprisingly, it was not his original game plan to do so.

“The LGBTQ legacy is something I am most proud of, but I never set out to make a show that was so LGBTQ.  What has been awesome for me is the self-discovery of what a queer point of view I have and to freely inject that into the show,” he said.

“How To Get Away with Murder” was an original member of Shondaland’s famed #TGIT Thursday night lineup with “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” and Vann says that because the show aired on broadcast television, it connects with an audience of people that might be seeing a queer relationship for the very first time.

“This show is reaching so many people. It is necessary television. When people see two men or two women kissing on TV, those moments are seen around the world, and it sends a message that this is the world we live in,” she said.

Vann says she has been an ally to the LGBTQ community “since growing up in New York” and she hopes that her portrayal on the series gets people to stop discrimination against queer people..

“The LGBTQ community is a community of people who need to be treated with dignity and respect because they are human. They are no different than the rest of us,” Vann said.

“How to Get Away with Murder” won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, and it was that win that sparked the decision to make Davis’ Annalise Keating bisexual.

“I was actually at the GLAAD Awards that first season, and I told Viola that I had an idea for Season 2. I told her I think Annalise used to be in love with a woman and she just smiled! I think she really likes to be challenged. The whole journey for Annalise is for her to get back to who she is at her core,” he said.

In 2018, another pivotal moment that stands out in the show’s history was when Ricamora’s character came out to his traditional Filipino mother as HIV-positive.

GLAAD worked as an advisor on the episode, introducing the writers to people living with HIV so they could hear their personal stories of telling family members they were HIV-positive.

Ricamora spoke with GLAAD after the episode originally aired and said that it was imperative for him to show an HIV narrative that is not seen nearly enough.

“There is this tendency to approach storylines with characters living with HIV and AIDS with such a heaviness and I think that just in showing Oliver living his day-to-day life, even in episodes where we haven’t mentioned it, it is allowing people to see characters and a person living with HIV that is thriving and it’s not about them having a crisis,” Ricamora said.

Flash forward to today, Ricamora, who is gay, says that portraying Oliver, has helped him accept his own queer identity.

“The show has really healed a deep part of me.  I did not have a great coming out experience in high school. I lost most of my friends. When the pilot came out, I had a little bit of a panic attack after I watched it because I realized how many people were going to see this gay story. I felt exposed, the same way I did in high school. But to see the love and support that came out of that experience has truly healed a part of me that was really traumatized.”

In an earlier episode during its final season, Annalise finally opens up to her elderly, ill mother (played by Cicely Tyson) about her sexuality and talks about having been in love with a woman. Two episodes later, we see her declare in an open courtroom “I am a bisexual woman!” Nowalk says that it was important to see this side of her character through to the end.

“When Annalise tells her mother things, so much of the time, she is also really telling that to herself.  I finally found that with Annalise – she could own it and she realized that is a part of her. To love herself she had to share that with her mother,” he said.

Like so many shows, a fandom can continue to grow when people stream a series after it’s aired. Nowalk says that because the previous seasons are available on Netflix, he regularly hears from queer people all over the world who say the show finally made them feel seen and represented.

Ricamora says it’s these kinds of messages on social media that he has received for six years that is truly what he is the most proud of.

“On a weekly basis there will be people who say they have been able to see themselves in the character of Oliver, or that they have been made more comfortable with who they are because of Connor and Oliver’s relationship. People have also said that they have been able to come out to their friends and family because of these characters who they could identify with and gain strength from,” he said.

Reality star takes polygraph test to squash gay rumors… then admits he’s fooled around with guys

Reality star takes polygraph test to squash gay rumors… then admits he’s fooled around with guys

Antonio Pavón is a retired bullfighter, TV personality, and contestant on the most recent season of Spain’s version of Survivor.

During the season, rumors that he and fellow contestant José Antonio Avilés engaged in a romantic relationship began circulating among cast members after Avilés alleged the two had dinner and hooked up in a hotel room prior to shooting.

Though Pavón vehemently denied the claim, the rumors followed him throughout his time on the show. In an effort to finally put them to bed once and for all, the 38-year-old father of one stopped by the show Sábado Deluxe to take a lie detector test.

When asked by host Jorge Javier Vázquez whether he ever had sex with Avilés, Pavón answered “no.” The lie detector test confirmed he was telling the truth.

But here’s where things got interesting.

When asked whether he had ever had any homosexual experiences, Pavón answered “yes.” The lie detector test once again confirmed he was telling the truth, much to Vázquez’s excitement.

Asked to elaborate, Pavón made a not-so-subtle jab at Avilés, saying, “At the moment I am not gay. I am straight. If I take the step tomorrow, it will be with a handsome guy.”

He added that his first response to hearing Avilés’ outrageous claims was to laugh, but the joke has since grown old.

“I would like him to retract it,” Pavón said. “I didn’t have dinner with him at the hotel.”

Pavón also noted that, while it’s true he fooled around with a guy in the past, there was no penetration and it was mostly just touching and grabbing.

Aimee Stephens

Aimee Stephens, the plaintiff at the center of the U.S. Supreme Court’s first case involving transgender rights, has died at 59. Stephens’s case was argued before SCOTUS with two other LGBTQ rights cases in October, but the court has not yet ruled. Stephens’s death will not affect the case’s status.

The New York Times reports: “She died from complications related to kidney failure, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which represented Ms. Stephens. Ms. Stephens had been on dialysis for some time and entered hospice care in late April, according to the A.C.L.U. Donna Stephens, Aimee Stephens’s wife, thanked supporters in a statement for their ‘kindness, generosity, and keeping my best friend and soul mate in your thoughts and prayers.’”

The ACLU on Stephens’ case: “Aimee Stephens had worked for nearly six years as a funeral director at R.G. and G.R. Harris Funeral Homes when she informed the funeral home’s owner that she is a transgender woman. Her employer fired her, and the EEOC sued on her behalf. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Aimee’s employer engaged in unlawful sex discrimination when it fired her because she’s transgender. R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes is asking the Supreme Court to review the case. The ACLU represents Aimee Stephens.”

.@DrBiden and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Aimee Stephens. We send our deepest condolences to her wife, Donna, and her family. Aimee’s spirit and courage will not only be her legacy but our guiding light as we carry on her fight for equality. t.co/F9cAnGh6VC

The LGBTQ community owes Aimee Stephens our deepest gratitude for her bravery in standing up for the right of LGBTQ people to live as ourselves. We share our condolences with all of her friends & family, and especially her wife, Donna Stephens. t.co/wbMJpMgERu

Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown re-proposed to his partner, Ian Jordan, this week.

The two men have been together for ten years. They first got engaged when Brown, 39, Queer Eye’s Culture Expert, got down on one knee in a Los Angeles restaurant in May 2018 during Jordan’s birthday celebrations.

The men were due to marry in the next few months. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has put those plans on hold. Instead, they’ve been following stay-at-home orders in LA.

Instead, to mark Jordan’s 49th birthday this week, Brown decided to surprise him.

Captured on video, Brown turns to Jordan, a TV director, and says, “Ian, as you know, I love you very much, and after this quarantine, I realized how much I love you, and we were supposed to be getting married and that’s getting canceled because of corona, and you also lost your engagement ring,” he says, reaching into the pocket of his pants and getting down on one knee.

“So, I decided to ask you to marry me again and bought you another engagement ring!”

A visibly moved Jordan, wearing a happy birthday tiara, hugs and kisses his partner.

Brown’s caption to the video reiterated the message: “I’m Engaged… Again! During this Quarantine I have fallen even deeper in love w/ my fiancé @theianjordan so on his bday / which is also our anniversary I proposed again. Our wedding has been canceled/postponed like so many other people but I still wanted to celebrate our love. I love you Sugah!”

Brown’s first taste of fame came with 2004’s The Real World: Philadelphia, but he saw his profile skyrocket after landing the Queer Eye gig in 2018. He’s since also been a contestant on Dancing With The Stars, published a memoir, and co-authored a children’s book with the elder of his two sons, Jason ‘Rachel’ Brown.

Season five of Queer Eye is due to arrive on Netflix this summer, and a sixth season has already been commissioned.

Hillary Clinton Slams Jared Kushner: ‘The President’s Son-in-Law Doesn’t Get to Decide When the Election Is’

Jared Kushner Hillary Clinton election

Hillary Clinton blasted Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on Twitter Wednesday morning after Kushner gave an interview with TIME magazine talking about a possible delay to the November election.

Said Kushner about holding the election on its planned date, November 3: “I’m not sure I can commit one way or the other, but right now that’s the plan. Hopefully by the time we get to September, October, November, we’ve done enough work with testing and with all the different things we’re trying to do to prevent a future outbreak of the magnitude that would make us shut down again. I’m not sure I can commit one way or the other, but right now that’s the plan.”

Tweeted Clinton: “I can’t believe I have to write this sentence, but the president’s son-in-law doesn’t get to decide when the election is.”
