LGBTQ originals ‘The Half of It’ and ‘Hollywood’ debut on Netflix on Friday, May 1st

LGBTQ originals ‘The Half of It’ and ‘Hollywood’ debut on Netflix on Friday, May 1st

Ryan Murphy Hollywood

Netflix

With summer and Pride season around the corner (COVID-19 notwithstanding) Netflix is kicking off the welcoming of warmer weather and pride programming with two new hugely important LGBTQ-inclusive projects, both dropping on Friday, May 1st; Hollywood and The Half of It.

Ryan Murphy is out with Hollywood, his first scripted series produced originally for Netflix. (last fall’s The Politician was produced by Twentieth Television for Netflix) A new limited series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, Hollywood follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in Tinseltown — no matter the cost. Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender, and sexuality that continue to this day. Provocative and incisive, Hollywood exposes and examines decades-old power dynamics, and what the entertainment landscape might look like if they had been dismantled.

The show stars David Corenswet, Darren Criss, Jeremy Pope, Samara Weaving, Laura Harrier, Jim Parsons, Dylan McDermott, Holland Taylor, Patti LuPone, Jake Picking, and Joe Mantello, along with notable guest stars Maude Apatow, Mira Sorvino, Rob Reiner, and Michelle Krusiec. Janet Mock is an executive producer and also directed 2 of the 7 episodes.

The Half of It
After a 16-year absence from the film world following her 2005 hit indie film Saving Face, screenwriter Alice Wu is back today with The Half of It. The teen rom-com is described by IndieWire as, “a modern riff on the Cyrano story, this time with a gender-swap that imagines the lead as something of a Wu stand-in: shy young Chinese-American Ellie (Leah Lewis) harbors a secret crush on Aster (Alexxis Lemire), a girl she’s expected to woo through letters for the awkward but sweet Paul (Daniel Diemer).”

GLAAD’s head of talent Anthony Ramos caught up with Wu and the young cast to talk about the film, which just won the U.S. Narrative prize in competition at the 2020 (virtual) Tribeca Film Festival

GLAAD is co-sponsoring a virtual watch party on Twitter for The Half of It on Friday, May 1st along with CAPE and Gold House. Head online and use the hashtags #TheHalfOfIt and #GoldOpen to participate!

That time a straight teen asked his gay best friend to prom in the cutest promposal ever

That time a straight teen asked his gay best friend to prom in the cutest promposal ever

This year marks the 50th anniversary since the first pride parade following the 1969 riot at New York City’s Stonewall Inn. Since we’re unable to gather in person this June, Queerty is celebrating pride season with our “Moments of Pride” series. We’re looking back through our archives at stories that have moved or inspired us, made us laugh, opened our hearts and minds, or that simply make us proud. Throughout the spring and into summer, we’ll be commenting on these subjects through today’s lens to show just how far we have come in a half-century. Happy pride!

In 2015, Las Vegas high school student Jacob Lescenski asked his friend Anthony Martinez to the prom. What made the story extra special is that Jacob is straight and Anthony is gay.

Jacob was comfortable enough with his sexuality that he didn’t care what others might think about him taking his best friend, who happened to be a gay guy, to the prom. Not only that, put he put together the cutest promposal ever.

First, he made a giant sign that read, “You’re hella gay, I’m hella str8, but you’re like my brother, so be my d8?” Then he had a bunch of their friends hold it up in the cafeteria for Anthony to see when he walked in.

The story went viral. Afterwards, both teenagers were invited to speak at the HRC’s gala in Las Vegas.

Trevor Noah Hilariously Destroys Elon Musk for ‘Insane’ Anti-Lockdown Comments: WATCH

The Daily Show host Trevor Noah ripped into billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk on Thursday for referring to coronavirus social-distancing restrictions as “fascist.”

“We’re going on six weeks of lockdown and it’s clearly starting to wear on some people’s nerves — people like Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and a man who definitely has an escape hatch,” Noah said.

“He’s never been a fan of the shutdown in the first place, but last night, he pushed the button for insane mode,” Noah added, before playing a clip of Musk addressing investors during an earnings call this week.

“This is fascist. This is not democratic, this is not freedom,” Musk said on the call. “Give people back their godd— freedom.”

“Yes, Elon, finally someone has the sense to call out this fascist American government that’s asking people to please stay in their houses to try and save their own lives,” Noah said sarcastically, noting that people can still go to the grocery store, take walks, and even hit the beach in some places.

“But you definitely can’t go to H&M, and that is the definition of fascism,” Noah quipped.

“I see what Elon Musk is really doing here,. This guy’s just trying to stir up civil unrest, so that people end up buying one of his bullet-proof trucks,” Noah added. “You know, the weirdest part of all this is that Elon Musk always says that we’re all living in a computer simulation. But now he’s like, ‘Yo, yo, the universe might be fake, but my stock prices are real. Let’s take this shit seriously, people.’”

HRC RESPONDS TO RASH OF ANTI-LGBTQ VIOLENCE IN PUERTO RICO: There have been at least 10 deaths of LGBTQ individuals in the past 15 months on the island, the highest number of killings that Puerto Rico has seen in a decade. Five deaths have transpired over the past two months alone, and these most recent deaths represent the majority of the at least nine violent deaths of transgender and gender non-conforming people that have happened in the U.S. this year. “There is a crisis facing LGBTQ people in Puerto Rico,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid). “This violence must end. Each of the 10 people who have been killed had a family, friends and a community. When we lose someone, especially under violent circumstances, it leaves a long trail of unshakeable trauma. The Human Rights Campaign is committed to supporting our partners on the ground and the Puerto Rican LGBTQ community as long as it takes for the government to take this seriously.”

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY — HRC ENDORSES PRO-EQUALITY LEADERS FOR THE PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATURE: “Pennsylvania is at a crossroads. For too long, LGBTQ Pennsylvanians have lived with the threat of being fired or discriminated against solely because of who they are or who they love,” said HRC Pennsylvania State Director Ryan Matthews. “Pennsylvania is the only state in the northeast without a law prohibiting discrimination against LGBTQ people.  To change that, we must elect bold, progressive pro-equality leaders like State Senator Larry Farnese and Jessica Benham who will work to ensure LGBTQ Pennsylvanians gain the full legal equality they deserve.” More from HRC

.@HRC is proud to endorse pro-equality leaders State Senator @FarneseForPA for reelection and @jessicalbenham for the Pennsylvania State House.

HRC MARKS ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH: As we take time to honor the advocates and allies who have driven our movement forward at the intersections of LGBTQ experience and Asian Pacific Islander (API) identities, it’s important to also acknowledge the ongoing challenges and barriers the community still face. From visibility on television and in movies to published works and representation in public office, APIs are still fighting for diverse representation and equality across the board. HRC RECOGNIZES MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH: Now more than ever, it’s crucial that we shine a light on mental health in the LGBTQ community. We must ensure that all people — regardless of where they are in life — receive the support needed to truly thrive. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated mental health concerns for many in our community, especially for those disproportionately impacted by the pandemic including communities of color and people living with HIV/AIDS. While the current environment we live in presents challenges, our community has always been one of resilience, perseverance and strength in the face of adversity. Read more from HRC
