Daily Dose: We’re on the Edge. Time to send a ‘Postcard’

Welcome to Queerty’s latest entry in our Queerantined: Daily Dose series. Every day as long as the COVID-19 pandemic has us under quarantine, we’ll release a suggested bit of gloriously queer entertainment designed to keep you from getting stir crazy in the house. Each weekend, we will also suggest a bingable title to keep you extra busy.

The Gangbusters: Postcards from the Edge

Feel like you’re losing your mind yet? Us too. Maybe that’s why we gravitate towards Postcards from the Edge, Mike Nichols’ comedy about addiction, mental health and Hollywood, penned by the great Carrie Fisher. The semiautobiographical tale follows a young actress (Meryl Streep) forced to move in with her megastar mom (Shirley MacLaine) while struggling with drug addiction. Heartache and hilarity (more of the latter) ensue, as Fisher takes pages from her own life with her famous mom–Debbie Reynolds–and transforms them into a semiautobiographical screenplay. MacLaine has a show-stopping musical number, while Streep gives her best ever performance. Reread that sentence again–yes it’s true. Loaded with acid wit, quotable zingers and tender observations about the nature of stardom and addiction, Postcards from the Edge is perfect viewing for quarantine time…especially when on the edge of cracking up.

Streams on Amazon, VUDU, iTunes & YouTube.

Linda Tripp, Whose Secret Tapes of Monica Lewinsky Fueled the Clinton Impeachment Scandal, is Dead at 70

Linda Tripp, the White House staffer who secretly recorded her conversations with White House intern Monica Lewinsky about Lewinsky’s affair with then-President Bill Clinton and turned them over to Kenneth Starr in exchange for immunity during Clinton’s impeachment trial, has died at 70.

The New York Post reports: “Tripp has been seriously ill and on her deathbed Tuesday night, according to a Facebook posting by her daughter. The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday afternoon that she had passed. … Tripp’s son-in-law, Thomas Foley, told The Post that he was unable to share any information about her condition. … Allison told TMZ that Tripp’s illness was not related to the coronavirus.”

Lewinsky tweeted words of support for Tripp’s family earlier on Wednesday.

no matter the past, upon hearing that linda tripp is very seriously ill, i hope for her recovery. i can’t imagine how difficult this is for her family.

Melania Trump tries to be inspiring in icy new video, fails miserably

Melania Trump tries to be inspiring in icy new video, fails miserably

It’s easy to forget that Melania Trump exists, what with everything that’s been going on lately, paired with the fact that she’s been the most absent First Lady in modern history. But every now and then, she does step out from her gilded cage to do the bare minimum of what’s expected of her.

Like today, when she spared an entire 47-seconds of her time to record a video in which she tried to inspire hope in the nation’s healthcare workers who are currently working tirelessly on the front lines of this ever-worsening coronavirus pandemic.

“To all medical personal and the other frontline responders,” Melania says at the top of the video, “on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you.”

She continues,”It is because of you that the people of America are receiving the care and treatment they need.”

Giving credit where credit is due, she’s right about that. It’s doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel–who, until very recently, have been receiving virtually no help from Trump–that are caring for the sick and dying. They are heroes.

“Our prayers are with all who are fighting this invisible enemy,” Mrs. Trump continues.

So how are you feeling after watching that video? Are you inspired? Relieved? Hopeful about the future?

Yeah, nobody else is either.

The response to Mrs. Trump’s video has been about what we’ve come to expect anytime she tries to #BeBest. Let’s take a look…

Did we check to make sure this wasn’t a Michelle Obama speech?

Where are the tests?
Where are the masks?
Where is the PPE?
Where is the federal coordination?
Where is the empathy?
Where is the oversight?
Where is the responsibility?

Your husband knew in Nov 2019 and did NOTHING. The Intel Community sent the briefings but he NEVER ACTED! He’s done now, start packing your bags, and don’t steal the towels on the way out the door.

I am deeply concerned about the lack of progress on your Tennis Pavillion (sic) … please do not let this minor “virus” interrupt the rush to establish your right to a swanky place to sit while others play tennis near you

‘Friday’ Singer Rebecca Black Comes Out as Queer

Rebecca Black, who rose to fame when her song “Friday” went viral in 2011, has come out as queer.

Black spoke about her sexual orientation with co-hosts Jack Dodge and Amy Ordman on the podcast Dating Straight. Said Black, of not having spoken about it till now: “I made a conscious decision not to ‘come out.’ I guess people starting asking and I stopped not responding. I’m still in the process it feels like.”

Added Black, of how she identifies: “Every day is different. It’s something over the past few years, I’ve been having a lot of conversations with myself about. To me, the word queer feels really nice. I’ve dated a lot of different types of people and I don’t really know what the future holds. Some days, I feel a little more on the ‘gay’ side than others.”
