Daily Dose: An overlooked musical that will take you to ‘Church’

Welcome to Queerty’s latest entry in our series, Queerantined: Daily Dose. Every weekday as long as the COVID-19 pandemic has us under quarantine, we’ll release a suggested bit of gloriously queer entertainment designed to keep you from getting stir crazy in the house. Each weekend, we will also suggest a binge-able title to keep you extra engaged.

The Inspirational: Saturday Church

This terrific musical landed on the festival circuit in 2017. Saturday Church focuses on 14-year-old Ulysses (Broadway kid Luka Kain), a fatherless, effeminate youth beginning to discover his own queerness. With his mother working long hours, his abusive Aunt Rose (Regina Taylor) becomes his caretaker. Ulysses eventually escapes into the world of Saturday Church, an LGBTQ youth support group overseen by a group of transgender women, led by the world-weary Ebony (MJ Rodriguez, in her feature debut). There, he begins a musical journey of self-discovery and burgeoning friendships as he learns to take pride in himself, and embrace his attraction to other boys his age.

Writer/director Damon Cardasis injects Saturday Church with an urgent energy, and a hearty dose of fantasy: this is the coming out story so many of us wish we could have had. With terrific songs by Nathan Larson, the film celebrates the LGBTQ community like few other movies ever have, treating queer safe spaces as a kind of sacred ground, and the older LGBTQ people that dwell within them as guardian angels. Kain gives a sensitive and charismatic performance in the lead, as does Rodriguez, in a role that shows off her musical gifts, as well as foreshadows her work on Pose. Indya Moore also has a supporting role, as does transgender icon Kate BornsteinSaturday Church is exactly the kind of religious service we can get behind: one that celebrates diversity with love, and that makes us want to get up and dance.

Streams on Amazon, VUDU, YouTube and Kanopy.

Tunisia Denies Reports it Recognized Gay Marriage

Tunisia Denies Reports it Recognized Gay Marriage

Lotfi Zitoun

A Tunisian official has denied reports that it recognized a same-sex marriage after Tunisian LGBTQ organization Shams reported it on Facebook earlier this week.

The Jerusalem Post reports: “Speaking at a Tunisia parliament hearing, local affairs minister Lotfi Zitoun declared that gay marriage  was not recognized and the news was a false story,  according to a French-language story on the website Webdo Tunis.  The Jerusalem Post reported on Monday, prior to Zitoun’s announcement, that the Tunisian LGBTQ organization Shams announced on its Facebook: ‘For first time in the history of Tunisia and the Arab world, a gay marriage contract between a man of French nationality and another of Tunisian nationality, is officially recognized in Tunisia.’”

Out counselor Glen North promises “emotions, glitter, and tears” in new Bravo series ‘Camp Getaway’

Out counselor Glen North promises “emotions, glitter, and tears” in new Bravo series ‘Camp Getaway’

Bravo

Bravo’s latest drama-filled docuseries, “Camp Getaway,” follows a group of attractive young singles who trade in their day jobs on the weekends to become hard-partying camp counselors at a raucous, adults-only getaway.

Check out the trailer for “Camp Getaway” below:

One of the counselors is Glen North, an out musical theater performer who hopes that his many talents will both impress the campers and find him romance.

Is “Camp Getaway” essentially “Below Deck” for campers? North says that is the ultimate compliment!

“There are major similarities! Like “Below Deck,” our show is all about the stresses of working on a job and you are all living together! It is blast but there is definitely some drama that goes on behind the scenes!”

Well, this is on Bravo after all!  So are the “Camp Getaway” counselors as successful in the romance department as their “Below Deck” crew counterparts?

“I was hoping to make a connection at Camp Getaway, but some of the counselors had better luck than I did.  But there is an LGBTQ weekend on the show coming up, so you will have to check in to see how I do in the love life department!” he said.

Before joining the Bravo-lebrity ranks, North who lives in New York City, was a jack-of-all-trades. His day jobs include personal trainer, bartender, dancer, and tour guide.

“I moved to New York to be an actor, so a lot of my jobs reflect that. One of my favorites is my tour guide job and I do an LGBTQ history tour that begins and ends at Stonewall.

However, given the current pandemic and forced physical distancing, those intimate walking tours are on hold for the time being, but Glen says he has a plan to keep educating people on the city and queer culture.

“I really would love to do a virtual version of the tour. I want to find ways to make it interactive.  The tour is nothing without the community and the people who take the tour and what they add to the experience, so I want to still get people involved.”

Glenn is also hoping “Camp Getaway” brings some joy to Bravo fans who are forced to stay at home.

“People are yearning for that human connection again right now and I think people will enjoy watching our journey connecting on the show. It is going to be a lot of fun, but it is also going to have a lot of heart. There’s a lot of emotions, glitter and tears – but a nice blend of all of them,” he said.

“Camp Getaway” premieres May 4 at 10pm on Bravo.
