Cuomo: Study Suggests 13.9% of New Yorkers Have Had Coronavirus (WATCH)

The results of a new antibody testing study suggest that 13.9 percent of New Yorkers have had the coronavirus, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

NEW: Preliminary estimates in New York antibody study approximate that 13.9 percent of the state’s residents have had the coronavirus, @NYGovCuomo says t.co/AprxQSmDOc pic.twitter.com/bq42TWvP16

— CBS Evening News (@CBSEveningNews) April 23, 2020

CNBC reports: The state randomly tested 3,000 people at grocery stores and shopping locations across 19 counties in 40 localities, Cuomo said. “What we found so far is that the state-wide number is 13.9% tested positive for having the antibodies. What does that mean? It means these were people who were infected and who developed the antibodies to fight the infection,” he said. “They were infected three weeks ago, four weeks ago, five weeks ago, six weeks ago, but they had the virus, they developed the antibodies and they are now recovered.’”

More from NBC 4: That equates to 2.7 million infections statewide — more than 10 times the state’s current number of confirmed cases. The study, part of Cuomo’s “aggressive” antibody testing launched earlier this week, involves random daily tests of 3,000 New Yorkers. New York City had a higher rate of antibodies (21.2 percent) than anywhere else in the state and accounted for 43 percent of the total tested. Long Island had a 16.7 percent positivity rate, while Westchester and Rockland counties saw 11.7 percent of their participants come up with the antibody. The rest of the state, which accounted for about a third of those studied, had a 3.6 percent positivity rate. There were early variations by race/ethnicity and age as well.

Today, GLAAD announced that Billy Porter, Pete & Chasten Buttigieg, Rosie O’Donnell, Jonathan Van Ness, Brian Michael Smith, Ross Mathews, and Tyler Oakley will join GLAAD’s livestream event, “Together in Pride: You are Not Alone,” on Sunday, April 26 at 8pm ET on GLAAD’s YouTube channel and Facebook Live. GLAAD also announced that Billy Eichner and Lilly Singh will co-host the event, which will include special performances from Alex Newell, the cast of Broadway’s “Jagged Little Pill”, as well as previously announced performances from Kesha and Melissa Etheridge. Mj Rodriguez and George Salazar, who previously co-starred in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ at Pasadena Playhouse, will also perform.

“Together in Pride: You are Not Alone” will highlight the LGBTQ response to COVID-19 and amplify messages of acceptance and affirmation to the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV during this unprecedented time. The livestream will raise funds for LGBTQ community centers that are members of CenterLink. Follow GLAAD on Twitter and Facebook for links to watch the event. You can also RSVP for the event here

GLAAD previously announced special guests including Matt Bomer, Adam Lambert, Bebe Rexha, Dan Levy, Wilson Cruz, Kathy Griffin, Gigi Gorgeous, Nats Getty, Michelle Visage, Javier Muñoz, Sean Hayes, Sharon Stone, and Tatiana Maslany. The livestream event will feature performances, interviews, video messages, and interviews with front-line LGBTQ doctors and leaders of local LGBTQ community centers. Actor and producer Erich Bergen is creating the event with GLAAD.

The “Together in Pride: You are Not Alone” livestream will also raise critical funds for CenterLink, a coalition of more than 250 LGBTQ community centers from 45 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, as well as Canada, China, Mexico, and Australia. CenterLink strengthens, supports, and connects LGBTQ community centers, which serve over 2 million people each year. Participating community centers will also share the livestream on their social platforms.

“At a time when some LGBTQ people could be isolating in homes that are not affirming, GLAAD is bringing together the biggest LGBTQ stars and allies to send messages of love, support and acceptance,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “So many LGBTQ people, especially our youth, depend on support from local community centers around the country, and during this time of financial distress, we must come together as a community to ensure that all LGBTQ organizations can continue their life-saving work.”

“LGBTQ centers are the heart of the community, and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic these centers have continued to provide vital connectivity and services, pivoting to virtual programming, modifying in-person services when possible, and ensuring that their communities have resources and support when they need it the most,” said Denise Spivak, Interim CEO of CenterLink.

The impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ people has been far-reaching. In March, GLAAD joined over 100 LGBTQ organizations in an open letter calling on U.S. public health officials and media to address the heightened vulnerability of LGBTQ people to COVID-19. Amongst other factors, the LGBTQ community experiences higher rates of cancer, HIV, and tobacco use – all which factor into higher susceptibility to negative outcomes from COVID-19. Additionally, LGBTQ people continue to experience discrimination and unwelcoming attitudes in medical settings, and as a result, many are reluctant to seek medical care. GLAAD also joined AIDS United and over 90 organizations in calling on Congress to recognize the increased vulnerability of people living with HIV to COVID-19. Prior to the livestream, GLAAD will also launch a storytelling campaign on its site to spotlight LGBTQ people responding to COVID-19 and to remember community members lost in the pandemic.

On April 15th, Centerlink released a letter signed by over 160 LGBTQ community centers to House and Senate leaders, asking them to include nonprofits who serve the LGBTQ population in future relief packages. The letter states: “The reality is more assistance is needed for LGBT community centers. They are providing critical services such as medical care, mental health counseling, virtual support groups, filling prescriptions, providing hot meals and check-in phone calls for older adults, serving as shelters for homeless youth, distributing nonperishable food items and hygiene products, case management, HIV testing, and hosting virtual engagement activities to decrease social isolation. Given the current financial crisis and loss of revenue, LGBT community centers could be forced to shrink their services, meaning tens of thousands could go without care.” The letter continues, “We urge Congress to expand the eligibility for nonprofits to participate in future stimulus packages. LGBT community centers are relying on you so that we can continue to provide critical and essentially needed services in response to the COVID-19 crisis.”

Sarah Kate Ellis will serve as an Executive Producer of the “Together in Pride: You are Not Alone,” livestream along with Erich Bergen, as well as GLAAD Media Award producers and staff members Anthony Ramos, Bill McDermott, Mark Hartnett, and Rich Ferraro.

GLAAD previously announced the cancellations of the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York and in Los Angeles. GLAAD is working to reschedule the event to later in the year.

Trump’s security chief: US may stop sharing intelligence with anti-gay countries

Trump’s security chief: US may stop sharing intelligence with anti-gay countries

Richard Grenell, the acting Director of National Intelligence, has suggested the US may stop sharing intelligence information with countries where it is illegal to be gay.

His comments were reported yesterday by the New York Times. He said the intelligence community can do more to push American values abroad.

“We can’t just simply make the moral argument and expect others to respond in kind because telling others that it’s the right thing to do doesn’t always work,” he said. “To fight for decriminalization is to fight for basic human rights.

“If a country that we worked in as the United States intelligence community was arresting women because of their gender, we would absolutely do something about it. Ultimately, the United States is safer when our partners respect basic human rights.”

Grenell, who is gay himself, was appointed to his current role by President Donald Trump in February. He has also been the US ambassador to Germany since May 2018. He is believed to be the first openly-gay cabinet member.

Grenell said he has the President’s backing to withhold intelligence: “We have the president’s total support. This is an American value, and this is United States policy.”

Grenell posted a photo of the New York Times article on his Instagram, with a comment stating: “I am forming a working group across the intelligence community to look at how we can help combat the criminalization of homosexuality. 69 countries currently will arrest someone for being gay (10 of these countries can kill you as a punishment).”

Among the countries in the world that criminalize same-sex sexual behavior are key US intelligence partners like Saudi Arabia and Kenya.

Grenell’s comments come a week after he sent a letter out to the agencies he oversees.

“Last year, the President charged me with leading the U.S. government’ s efforts to help decriminalize homosexuality in the 69 countries that currently make being gay a crime. In line with this, I have directed our team to establish an interagency working group to fully leverage the expertise of the IC [Intelligence Community] and will further advance these efforts through membership on the National Security Council.”

Whether Grenell’s suggestions are implemented remains to be seen. As ‘acting’ Director of National Intelligence, the Senate will vote on a full-time replacement in September – a point Grenell referenced in his letter last week while pledging to do more to end discrimination and harassment of LGBTQ people in the intelligence community.

“While I will likely not be in this role for long,” he said, “I plan to use this opportunity to drive lasting impact for the IC Pride community … I am committed to doing more to detect and respond to all discrimination and harassment within the workforce. I expect every IC agency to ensure policies are specific and deliberate in protecting the LGBT workforce.”

The Trump administration’s apparent push to end anti-gay laws abroad has raised eyebrows among some LGBTQ advocates in the US. Advocacy group GLAAD is keeping a running count of attacks the Trump administration has made on LGBTQ people since taking office. It currently stands at 136 anti-LGBTQ statements or measures over the 1,189 days of his Presidency so far.

Gov. Ron DeSantis Takes COVID-19 Victory Lap Despite 927 Deaths and Counting in Florida: WATCH

Gov. Ron DeSantis Takes COVID-19 Victory Lap Despite 927 Deaths and Counting in Florida: WATCH

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has faced heavy criticism for his response to the COVID-19 crisis, appeared on Fox News on Wednesday to gloat about the fact that the impact of the virus in the Sunshine State has — thus far — been less severe than some statistical models once predicted.

But DeSantis neglected to mention the fact that Florida recorded its second-deadliest day of the crisis on Wednesday, and experts are unsure whether the state has even reached its peak — in what is only the first wave of the pandemic.

DeSantis also misstated a key statistic, saying that only 2,200 people have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Health, the number of coronavirus hospitalizations in the state is actually more than twice that number, 4,455.

“People were predicting us to be worse than New York, like another Italy,” DeSantis told host Sean Hannity, who lavished praise on the governor throughout the segment.

“They said that this week, one of the newspapers in Florida said we would have 464,000 people hospitalized,” DeSantis added. “The actual number is 2,200. So we beat that by 462,000. But what we did very early was focus on the populations who are most at risk: Our senior citizens, and particularly our nursing homes and assisted living facilities.”

It’s not the first time DeSantis has misrepresented a key statistic about the impact of the virus. Previously, DeSantis falsely claimed that no on under 25 had died from COVID-19.

Early in the crisis, DeSantis was criticized for failing to shut down Florida before spring-breakers flooded the state’s beaches, which contributed to the spread of the virus nationwide. Three people who attended the Winter Party Festival, a large gay circuit party in Miami Beach in early March, have since died from COVID-19.

Nevertheless, DeSantis is claiming victory, touting a strategy of focusing on the state’s large population of vulnerable seniors, including at The Villages, a conservative retirement community that’s home to many supporters of President Donald Trump.

“We worked with The Villages constructively on social distancing, and here’s the thing, you don’t have to be draconian,” DeSantis said. “At the Villages, they’re playing golf just like they always do, but they’re doing it with social distancing. So, they don’t share a cart with anyone and they don’t touch the flagstick and they’ve ended up doing very well. The president tweeted congratulations to them.”

Congratulations to all of my many friends at The Villages in Florida on having done so well, and with such great spirit, during these rather unusual times. So proud of everyone! Mark Morse & Gary Lester have really stepped up to the plate. Hope to see everyone soon.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 20, 2020

“People would play golf with social distancing, would fish, while maintaining social distancing and I think that’s healthy,” DeSantis added. “People sitting inside all day eating Cheetos and watching Netflix … that’s not great. I think we’ve respected people, I think we did it the right way and I think it’s paid off. These draconian orders I don’t think have worked throughout the country.”

Hannity concluded the segment by saying that the statistics from Florida are “amazing.”

“Great work,” Hannity told DeSantis. “Thanks for saving America’s elderly.”

I Fell Asleep

I Fell Asleep

Julie Bracken posted a photo:

I Fell Asleep

Six stylised pieces of artwork I found from which I created this powerful assemblage of femininity. Heaven cannot come too soon, if this is what awaits and it is proof that every cloud has a silver lining.

Last night I dreamed I was in heaven
But you weren’t there
And I was crying like a baby
Looking for you everywhere
And I saw waterfalls of life
Stars that didn’t need a night
Somehow heaven wasn’t right
Without you

And an angel stood before me
And to my Shame
I begged and pleaded her to send me
From whence I came
Then all my sorrow flew away
When I heard the Angel say
If you left how could I stay
Without you
