Amid Global Pandemic, Idaho Governor Brad Little Prioritizes and Signs Anti-Transgender Legislation

Today, HRC responded to the news that Idaho Governor Brad Little has signed two pieces of discriminatory anti-transgender legislation, commonly referred to as HB 500 and HB 509, even as his state and the world reel from the effects of COVID-19. HB 500 will bar transgender women and girls from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity. HB 509 flies in the face of a recent court decision by forbidding transgender and nonbinary Idahoans from changing their gender marker on their birth certificates. Both laws are unconstitutional and will result in litigation at the cost of the Idaho taxpayer, which is particularly appalling during these uncertain times.

“We are living in an unprecedented global health crisis, with confirmed cases of COVID-19 increasing on a daily basis in Idaho, across the United States and around the world, but Governor Brad Little and the Idaho legislature have decided to prioritize the demonization of transgender people,” said Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign. “This is unacceptable, and a gross misuse of taxpayer funds and trust. Idaho is leading the way in anti-transgender discrimination, and  at a time when life is hard enough for everyone, Idaho’s elected leaders will be remembered for working to make their transgender residents’ lives even harder. Shame on Governor Little and the legislators who championed these heinous pieces of legislation.”

Idaho is now a national innovator in discrimination, having passed and signed into law first-of-its-kind anti-transgender legislation. It also becomes the first state in the country this year to enact legislation that specifically singles out the transgender community for discriminatory treatment.

H.B. 500 forbids transgender girls from being able to play on sports teams with other girls, and it will subject all girls to the risk of invasive, expensive, and inappropriate testing.  It is so clearly unconstitutional that Idaho’s current Attorney General and five previous Attorneys General of Idaho all urged the legislature and Governor to prevent the bill from becoming law.  Yet, legislators and the governor did not listen and signed taxpayers up to bear the cost of defending this discriminatory legislation in court.

HB 509 flouts a recent decision by a federal court and, again contrary to the advice of the Idaho Attorney General, guarantees that Idaho taxpayers will be paying to defend yet another discriminatory law – this time one that impedes transgender people from obtaining a birth certificate updated with the correct gender marker.

The bills were also opposed by business groups and medical professionals. Last week, the Human Rights Campaign and Freedom for All Americans re-released a letter signed by 40+ national businesses opposing anti-transgender legislation such as the bills signed into law by Governor Little.

HRC is grateful to the leadership of groups and activists on the ground that have been fighting against the spate of anti-LGBTQ legislation in Idaho, especially the coalition Moving Towards Freedom. The coalition is made up of the ACLU of Idaho, Add The Words, Beloved Bodies, Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, Legal Voice, Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii, and the Pride Foundation.

Daily Dose: Wait, they’re supposed to be lesbians?

Welcome to Queerty’s latest entry in our Queerantined: Daily Dose series. Every day as long as the COVID-19 pandemic has us under quarantine, we’ll release a suggested bit of gloriously queer entertainment designed to keep you from getting stir crazy in the house. Each weekend, we will also suggest a bingable title to keep you extra busy.

The Flawed: Fried Green Tomatoes

How can we love a movie that manages to downplay or totally erase all the queerness of the two central characters? We grapple with that question every time we screen Fried Green Tomatoes, and yet we still fall in love every time. Kathy Bates stars as a bored, sexually frustrated housewife who befriends a nursing home patient named Ninny (Jessica Tandy, at the height of her screen power). Ninny recounts a mystery from her small, southern hometown about two women: Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker), lifelong friends who survive poverty, abusive relationships and the perils of womanhood. Of course, modern audiences should pick up on the fact that Idgie and Ruth are lesbians, as the original novel made clear. The movie, made in 1991, downplays that element, which is what keeps Fried Green Tomatoes from becoming a classic of queer cinema. As it is though, the film features wonderful characters and performances from its leadsand a story we just can’t quit, even when it isn’t being true.

Streams on Amazon, Hulu, VUDU, iTunes & YouTube.

Right-Wing Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne Arrested for Defying ‘Stay-at-Home’ Order and Continuing to Hold Large Services

Right-Wing Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne Arrested for Defying ‘Stay-at-Home’ Order and Continuing to Hold Large Services

Right-wing pastor Rodney Howard-Browne, who refused to close The River at Tampa Bay church or pay attention to coronavirus “distancing” advisories, saying he and his congregation are not a bunch of “pansies,” has been arrested and booked on misdemeanor charges of unlawful assembly and violation of public health rules.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff held a press conference on March 30 announcing the warrant from Howard-Browne’s arrest.

Right Wing Watch reports: “For weeks, Howard-Browne has insisted on holding Sunday services on the grounds that he and his congregation are “not pansies” while insisting that his church is the most sterile building in America because it is supposedly equipped with machines that can instantaneously kill any virus. Howard-Browne has used these services to promote baseless conspiracy theories about the coronavirus outbreak and repeatedly vowed that he would never cancel services, regardless of what the government ordered. He held services again yesterday, after which he received a visit from the local sheriff’s office about his wanton flouting of the safer-at-home order.”

Said Howard-Browne on March 16: “Well I know they don’t want us to do this, but just turn around and greet two, three people. Tell them you love them, Jesus loves them. Amen. Listen, this has to be the safest place. If you cannot be saved in church, you in serious trouble. We are not stopping anything. I’ve got news for you, this church will never close. The only time the church is closed is when the Rapture is taking place. This Bible school is open because we’re raising up revivalists, not pansies.”

Howard-Brown also believes that coronavirus is a plot to kill people with vaccines, Right Wing Watch adds: “Howard-Browne, who was among evangelical leaders who laid hands upon and prayed over President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in 2017, dedicated most of his Sunday sermon to mocking fears about the spread of the coronavirus and calling it a ‘phantom plague’ designed to terrify people into receiving vaccines that will kill them, which he claimed was all part of a plan laid out in a 2010 document called ‘Scenarios for the Future of Technology and International Development’ produced by The Rockefeller Foundation and Global Business Network.”

Said Howard-Browne: “It’s been weaponized to instill fear into people because what they want to do is change the way the world functions, really forever. All these churches that are allowing themselves to come down to 250 [congregants], guess what? When you try to meet again, you ain’t gonna be able to meet again. They are going to keep you at 250 because you gave up ground. You gave up ground. Whatever ground you give up because of fear, you will give up permanently. Because the climate change narrative for global governance failed, they are using the World Health Organization to then come in and take over the control of nations and then they are going to bring in vaccines … There’s going to be forced vaccines, which they can kill off many people with vaccines. It’s about population reduction because there are too many people on the planet, but with the correct vaccines we can shoot them and then they can die.”
