Daily Dose: Wait, they’re supposed to be lesbians?

Welcome to Queerty’s latest entry in our Queerantined: Daily Dose series. Every day as long as the COVID-19 pandemic has us under quarantine, we’ll release a suggested bit of gloriously queer entertainment designed to keep you from getting stir crazy in the house. Each weekend, we will also suggest a bingable title to keep you extra busy.

The Flawed: Fried Green Tomatoes

How can we love a movie that manages to downplay or totally erase all the queerness of the two central characters? We grapple with that question every time we screen Fried Green Tomatoes, and yet we still fall in love every time. Kathy Bates stars as a bored, sexually frustrated housewife who befriends a nursing home patient named Ninny (Jessica Tandy, at the height of her screen power). Ninny recounts a mystery from her small, southern hometown about two women: Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker), lifelong friends who survive poverty, abusive relationships and the perils of womanhood. Of course, modern audiences should pick up on the fact that Idgie and Ruth are lesbians, as the original novel made clear. The movie, made in 1991, downplays that element, which is what keeps Fried Green Tomatoes from becoming a classic of queer cinema. As it is though, the film features wonderful characters and performances from its leadsand a story we just can’t quit, even when it isn’t being true.

Streams on Amazon, Hulu, VUDU, iTunes & YouTube.

Right-Wing Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne Arrested for Defying ‘Stay-at-Home’ Order and Continuing to Hold Large Services

Right-Wing Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne Arrested for Defying ‘Stay-at-Home’ Order and Continuing to Hold Large Services

Right-wing pastor Rodney Howard-Browne, who refused to close The River at Tampa Bay church or pay attention to coronavirus “distancing” advisories, saying he and his congregation are not a bunch of “pansies,” has been arrested and booked on misdemeanor charges of unlawful assembly and violation of public health rules.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff held a press conference on March 30 announcing the warrant from Howard-Browne’s arrest.

Right Wing Watch reports: “For weeks, Howard-Browne has insisted on holding Sunday services on the grounds that he and his congregation are “not pansies” while insisting that his church is the most sterile building in America because it is supposedly equipped with machines that can instantaneously kill any virus. Howard-Browne has used these services to promote baseless conspiracy theories about the coronavirus outbreak and repeatedly vowed that he would never cancel services, regardless of what the government ordered. He held services again yesterday, after which he received a visit from the local sheriff’s office about his wanton flouting of the safer-at-home order.”

Said Howard-Browne on March 16: “Well I know they don’t want us to do this, but just turn around and greet two, three people. Tell them you love them, Jesus loves them. Amen. Listen, this has to be the safest place. If you cannot be saved in church, you in serious trouble. We are not stopping anything. I’ve got news for you, this church will never close. The only time the church is closed is when the Rapture is taking place. This Bible school is open because we’re raising up revivalists, not pansies.”

Howard-Brown also believes that coronavirus is a plot to kill people with vaccines, Right Wing Watch adds: “Howard-Browne, who was among evangelical leaders who laid hands upon and prayed over President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in 2017, dedicated most of his Sunday sermon to mocking fears about the spread of the coronavirus and calling it a ‘phantom plague’ designed to terrify people into receiving vaccines that will kill them, which he claimed was all part of a plan laid out in a 2010 document called ‘Scenarios for the Future of Technology and International Development’ produced by The Rockefeller Foundation and Global Business Network.”

Said Howard-Browne: “It’s been weaponized to instill fear into people because what they want to do is change the way the world functions, really forever. All these churches that are allowing themselves to come down to 250 [congregants], guess what? When you try to meet again, you ain’t gonna be able to meet again. They are going to keep you at 250 because you gave up ground. You gave up ground. Whatever ground you give up because of fear, you will give up permanently. Because the climate change narrative for global governance failed, they are using the World Health Organization to then come in and take over the control of nations and then they are going to bring in vaccines … There’s going to be forced vaccines, which they can kill off many people with vaccines. It’s about population reduction because there are too many people on the planet, but with the correct vaccines we can shoot them and then they can die.”

Bad Bunny twerks in latex and thigh-highs in new music video

Bad Bunny is nothing if not committed to his quest towards standing up against toxic masculinity and machismo culture in the music industry and Latinx community.

In his new music video “Yo Perreo Sola” (“I Twerk Alone”), the Puerto Rican trap artist gets a full drag makeover, showing off three iconic looks, including a red latex getup, a skintight animal print dress, and some sexy thigh-high boots.

The song and its accompany video are about letting women dance at the club without constantly being harassed by horny guys.

“I wrote it from the perspective of a woman,” the 26-year-old explains to Rolling Stone. “I wanted a woman’s voice to sing it–‘yo perreo sola’–because it doesn’t mean the same thing when a man sings it. But I do feel like that woman sometimes.”

At the end the video, a message reads in Spanish: “If she doesn’t want to dance with you, respect her, she twerks alone.”

The video, released on Friday, has already amassed 40 million views on YouTube and is proving to be a huge hit with fans:

GERMANY. Researchers to introduce coronavirus “immunity certificates”. “The antibodies will indicate that the test participants have had the virus, have healed and are thereby ready to re-enter society and the workforce. The researchers plan to test 100,000 members of the public at a time, issuing documentation to those who have overcome the virus.”

POLITICO. Inside the White House during ’15 days to slow the spread’. “Desks were empty. Office lights were turned off. Many staffers had been told to work from home. The bustling Navy Mess was closed, and the usual stream of visitors rushing in and out of the West Wing had slowed to a trickle. Left behind were President Donald Trump, his top aides, and a small group of staffers, hunkered down and making battle plans as the coronavirus marched across the country. Each person was acutely aware that their decisions in the coming days could define their legacy — not to mention whether they kept their jobs after 2020.”

HEIST. Van Gogh painting stolen in overnight raid at Dutch museum. “The Singer Laren museum east of Amsterdam said that ‘The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring 1884’ by the Dutch master was taken in the early hours of Monday. By early afternoon, all that could be seen from the outside of the museum was a large white panel covering a door in the building’s glass facade.”

Having shelter is a fundamental human right: The story of Princess Janae Place

Having shelter is a fundamental human right: The story of Princess Janae Place

Princess Janae Place

To help us celebrate Trangender Day of Visibility, we sat down with Jevon Martin, CEO and Founder of Princess Janae Place, to ask him some questions about his life and work.

Princess Janae Place is New York State’s first and only community-based housing organization led by, and for, trans people. They work to eradicate homelessness by helping eradicate homlessness particularly trans people and people of color – find permanent housing, and provide medical, legal, housing, mental health, and social services to anyone that needs them. Jevon is taking over our Instagram account on Monday, March 30 to share his story, why he’s fighting to eradicate homeless for trans, gender non-conforming, and non-binary (TGNCNBI) people, and how he’s helping build a community for trans people in NYC.

What does Transgender Day of Visibility mean to you?

I see Transgender Day of Visibility as an opportunity to lift up the stories of trans people navigating the world today. There are so many amazing trans folks living incredible lives who don’t make the front page of the news. Storytelling is powerful as illustrating the challenges we face is important to increase awareness with larger audiences.

What is the mission of Princess Janae Place?

The mission of Princess Janae Place is to help trans people maximize their full potential by securing independent living after experiencing homelessness. We offer people a safe space in an unsafe world, acting as a bridge to help connect them to resources that are often intimidating to trans people used to facing stigma. One in five transgender people in the United States has faced discrimination when seeking a home, and more than one in ten have been evicted from their homes because of their gender identity. No one should be denied housing because of their gender identity, so we make sure that our clients are connected to the right people and places to secure housing and thrive.

What inspired the name Princess Janae Place?

The inspiration behind the name of the organization comes from Princess Janae Banks, an icon in the NYC ballroom and pageantry scene and mainstay in the entertainment industry. Janae was kicked out of her home at the age of 18 for identifying as transgender, but she soon found a safe and affirming home within the NYC ballroom scene. Janae worked for decades as an accomplished entertainer in some of NYC’s most famous venues. Because of her experience, Janae was a champion throughout her adult life for transgender individuals at risk of homelessness and housing insecurity. Janae passed away in 2013, and we work every day to further her legacy supporting the transgender community.

What’s the most challenging aspect of your work? The most rewarding?

The most challenging part of my work is when I see people so hurt and wounded by their circumstances. Finding yourself as you grow up is one of the hardest things we do in our lives. But imagine having to come of age while also experiencing housing insecurity. I see these people, who are so full of life and deserve so much, struggle to secure the basic needs so many of us take for granted. It really breaks my heart.

On the flip side, the most rewarding part of my work is seeing those same people flourish. When we first come into contact with our clients, I often see the promise in them that they don’t see in themselves. Working with them to secure housing and giving them a stable base to grow from is so rewarding – they quickly start to see the potential I always knew was there.

What is your most impactful program?

Our most impactful program is our HART program, which helps TGNCNBI people find homes. Because of the stigma and transphobia that often follows the community. It’s particularly challenging for them to find permanent housing. In the last two years alone, we’ve helped 90 people of transgender experience find permanent housing through the HART program. We’ve also partnered with Gilead Sciences through their TRANScend Community Impact Fund, which will allow us to grow the program, help even more people find homes, and provide additional resources to those transitioning from homelessness to independent living.

How is coronavirus impacting your work?

The coronavirus makes the work we do more urgent than ever. TGNCNBI people experiencing homelessness are increasingly vulnerable due to the pressures that coronavirus creates. Homeless trans people are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Sleeping in encampments with inadequate hygiene is especially dangerous right now given the additional risk of arrest due to NYC’s shelter in place order. But the alternative is going to a shelter, places trans folks often avoid because of stigma – not to mention, they’re crowded, making them dangerous places to go in a moment where we need to isolate from one another. Finding permanent housing for our clients where they can live independently and safely is crucial not only for themselves but for society as a whole.

What can our readers do to help?

The first thing that everyone can do right now is to stay safe and take the necessary actions, like social distancing and frequent hand-washing, to keep others safe too. Our clients are among those who will be hit the hardest by coronavirus, so the sooner we can get the situation under control, the better off they will be. That means everyone working together and playing their part to stop the spread of the virus. Additionally, we are always looking for people in New York City to house homeless members of our community in open rooms in their homes, volunteer their time, and of course, donate whatever they can to help us continue changing lives. A $100 donation means one day of stable housing and support services for our clients – it can change everything.
