U.S. Intelligence Agencies Warned of Deadly Pandemic in January, But Trump Ignored Them: Report

While Donald Trump was busy downplaying concerns about the coronavirus, saying it was under control and even dismissing it as a “hoax,” U.S. intelligence agencies were warning him of just the opposite.

“Donald Trump may not have been expecting this, but a lot of other people in the government were — they just couldn’t get him to do anything about it,” one official told the Washington Post, for a bombshell report published Friday night. “The system was blinking red.”

From WaPo: U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous, classified warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the coronavirus while President Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen, according to U.S. officials familiar with spy agency reporting. The intelligence reports didn’t predict when the virus might land on U.S. shores or recommend particular steps that public health officials should take, issues outside the purview of the intelligence agencies. But they did track the spread of the virus in China, and later in other countries, and warned that Chinese officials appeared to be minimizing the severity of the outbreak. Taken together, the reports and warnings painted an early picture of a virus that showed the characteristics of a globe-encircling pandemic that could require governments to take swift actions to contain it. But despite that constant flow of reporting, Trump continued publicly and privately to play down the threat the virus posed to Americans.

One of the best things about working at GLAAD is getting to celebrate the smart, funny, moving AND LGBTQ-inclusive stories we are seeing—in English and en Español. Sadly, this year, because of the worldwide health crisis, we are not able to announce award recipients as scheduled during the GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies. We will be announcing how award recipients will be announced soon.

With so many of us spending evenings (and days) at home, this may be the perfect time to catch up on TV shows and movies and journalism you may have missed. Andy Cohen Tests Positive for Coronavirus, Cancels At-Home Edition of ‘Watch What Happens Live’

Andy Cohen announced Friday he has tested positive for coronavirus, canceling plans for an “at-home” edition of Watch What Happens Live on Sunday.

“After a few days of self-quarantine, and not feeling great, I have tested positive for Coronavirus,” Cohen wrote on Instagram. “As much as I felt like I could push through whatever I was feeling to do #WWHL from home, we’re putting a pin in that for now so I can focus on getting better.  I want to thank all the medical professionals who are working tirelessly for all of us, and urge everybody to stay home and take care of themselves.”

Mediaite notes that Sunday’s at-home edition of Watch What Happens Live was set to feature Jerry O’Connell, Nene Leakes and Ramona Singer.

“Our show is arguably the most lo-tech show in late night in its current form. So the idea of taking it down even further a few notches is just ironic and hilarious,” Cohen told Variety earlier Friday. “I mean, we’re the show that I still can’t believe gets a live signal out of a very small clubhouse in Soho. So we will now be from my own clubhouse in the West Village. My show has always been something of a little coffee klatch, party-line type show. And this seemed like a very natural extension of not only the show, but obviously the times that we’re in right now.”
