On Wednesday, GLAAD joined over 100 LGBTQ organizations in releasing an open letter to media and public health officials outlining how certain LGBTQ people could be particularly vulnerable to novel coronavirus, as known as COVID-19. The letter was initiated by a coalition of six organizations: the National LGBT Cancer Network; GLMA Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality; Whitman-Walker Health; SAGE; New York Transgender Advocacy Group; and National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance.

Read the full letter here.

As concerns over the spread of COVID-19 continue to grow, the letter highlights how media and public health officials working with COVID-19 must understand how LGBTQ communities are among those who are particularly vulnerable to the negative health effects of this virus.

As outlined in the letter, increased vulnerability to the virus for LGBTQ people is a direct result of three factors:

  1. The LGBTQ+ population uses tobacco at rates that are 50% higher than the general population. COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that has proven particularly harmful to smokers.
  2. The LGBTQ+ population has higher rates of HIV and cancer, which means a greater number of us may have compromised immune systems, leaving us more vulnerable to COVID-19 infections.
  3. LGBTQ+ people continue to experience discrimination, unwelcoming attitudes, and lack of understanding from providers and staff in many health care settings, and as a result, many are reluctant to seek medical care except in situations that feel urgent – and perhaps not even then.

The letter also provides different ways that people involved with the COVID-19 response can ensure that LGBTQ+ communities are adequately served during this outbreak, including but not limited to:

  • Ensuring that media coverage notes the particular vulnerabilities of any person with pre-existing respiratory illnesses, compromised immune systems or who uses tobacco products.
  • Ensuring health messaging includes information tailored to communities at increased risk for COVID-19, including LGBTQ+ populations
  • Providing LGBTQ+ individuals resources to find welcoming providers
  • Ensuring surveillance efforts capture sexual orientation and gender identity as part of routine demographics
  • Ensuring that all COVID-19 responses take into account exceptionally vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ communities, including elders, bi people, and black and brown trans and gender nonconforming/nonbinary people

Currently, there are more than 3 million LGBTQ older people living in the United States, and these people are already less likely than their heterosexual and cisgender peers to reach out to health and aging providers, like senior centers, meal programs, and other programs designed to ensure their health and wellness. This is often due to fear of discrimination and harassment. The current mortality rate of COVID-19 is at 15% for older people, which means the virus is having a devastating impact on this population, including LGBTQ elders.

GLAAD tweeted out its support of the letter on Wednesday:

Los Angeles Pride will not happen in June, courtesy of coronavirus

We can hardly keep up with every event being canceled in the coronavirus reality we’re living in, so it’s hardly a shock that the latest public gathering to get postponed is Los Angeles Pride.

Still, at three months away, it’s the first June Pride to halt its plans, and we imagine not the last.

“Due to the concerns of COVID-19,” the organizers wrote on Twitter, “[Christopher Street West] will postpone all events related to the 50th Anniversary of LA Pride that were scheduled for June 2020. Organizers are assessing the situation. More information to be provided around the postponement as details become available.”

A new date has not been set.

Other Pride events that have been called off or postponed include the first ever Pride of the Americas in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Pride.

‘A New Low’: Trump Campaign Refers to Biden as ‘Rotting Corpse’ in Disgusting Tweet

President Donald Trump’s campaign, on its official Twitter account, referred to former Vice President Joe Biden, the likely Democratic nominee, as a “rotting corpse” and “the dead guy” on Friday:

“Joe Biden is the same rotting corpse of a candidate he was three weeks ago. It’s just that Democrats have decided that they would be better off with the dead guy than with Crazy Bernie,” Team Trump wrote.

Although Trump’s campaign was quoting directly from a Washington Times column by Charles Hurt, Twitter wasn’t having any of that possible excuse:

Gloria Gaynor handwashing to “I Will Survive” is what we all need right now

Gloria Gaynor handwashing to “I Will Survive” is what we all need right now

As the COVID-19 sweeps around the world, we all know what we must do to minimize transmission: keep washing our hands and try to avoid touching our faces too much.

It’s easy to feel anxious with the 24-hour drip-feed of news about the pandemic, so moments of light relief are welcome.

A video of disco diva Gloria Gaynor, 76, has gone viral (no pun intended). In the Tik Tok clip, posted on Thursday, Gaynor demonstrates her handwashing routine to – what else – but her classic hit, “I Will Survive”.

@gloriagaynorIt only takes :20 seconds to “SURVIVE!”👏💕🎶##iWillSurviveChallenge ##fyp ##coronavirus ##handwashing♬ I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

It’s led to an #IWillSurviveChallenge, with others singing the song for 20-seconds while washing their hands.

Gaynor also posted a 15-second clip to her Instagram.

Gaynor initially released “I Will Survive” as a B-side (remember them?) to a cover version of a song called “Substitute” in 1978. However, DJs and radio favored the flipside, and it was soon “I Will Survive” that began climbing the charts. It hit the top of the Billboard 100 in March 1979 and was also a number one hit in the UK and other countries.

It went on to sell an astounding 14 million copies in its first two years of release and has become a karaoke standard.

Gaynor has recently seen renewed interest in her career. Forty years after receiving a Grammy for “I Will Survive”, in January she won her second Grammy. Her 2019 album Testimony won in the Best Roots Gospel Album category.

At the time of writing, more than 1,600 cases of COVID-19, a new strain of coronavirus, were being treated across the United States, with at least 41 deaths reported.

Health experts recommend people wash their hands frequently for at least 20 seconds – including the wrists, backs of the hands, thumbs and between the fingers – to help prevent the spread of the virus. Anyone feeling ill is advised to self-isolate themselves.

Yesterday, over 100 LGBT health groups and advocacy organizations penned an open letter on how LGBTQ communities have a heightened vulnerability to the virus. LGBTQ people generally smoke more, have higher rates of HIV and cancer, and can experience discrimination from health care providers which puts them off seeking help.

The National LGBT Cancer Network, which published the open letter on its website, also offers information for LGBTQ people concerned about the virus, including advice on handwashing and links to resources.
